What's the most you've spent on a single card?

and what was it?

Mine was a Bobby Orr rookie card for $1,200. I ended up selling it for just a $100 profit...

  • I have four kids and quit my job 4 years ago to go to medical school. With that in mind, I feel almost guilty to report that I spend $100 on a raw 1954 Topps #1 Ted Williams. I know this will put me on the very low end of the totem pole in this crowd, but I look forward to the post residency days in the coming years when I can indulge myself more.

This card is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorites...been tracking them on ebay for awhile.
  • The second most I've spent for a single card is $2433 for this holed-faced item from the last Mastro auction. The highest is for my icon (undisclosed as I'm still recovering.) A low-grade Goudey Lajoie is probably the most I'll ever spend for a single card in my collecting life unless I'm blessed with an unexpected influx of cash. I used to scoff at women who'd spend tons on jewelry then place the items in a safe deposit box, but now I do the same thing. All this money spent and no one (even me) is able to enjoy it daily.

    Mike,

I have just bought a scanner and will try to get one up.

When I first saw this card,I knew that I had to own one.It is by far my favorite card.

    Axtell,

Very tough to find perfectly centered.I saw one at last years National and should have taken mine to see if I could have traded up.Mine is nice by not quite centered.Still,a nice card and one I will probably never sell.

Mine was $546.37 out-the-door for a 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente PSA 5 (includes the 37 cent stamp to send the check). Next highest was a Koufax rookie (also PSA 5) from the same year for $299.37. Both went bye-bye when I sold my partial 1955 PSA 5/6 set last December.

Also, for the record to lawnmowerman, the most I've paid for a lawnmower is $3800 for a Sears Craftsman zero-turn rider (including the bagger). Pushed a beater around for a lot of summers while I saved for that one image.

Mark, i hear you. I am going to grad school (masters program at a private university....that equates to no funding whatsoever)...so, as i spend willfully all my money for cards in slabs, i wonder aloud about what appears to be my monetary foolishness.

with that in mind, i spent $875 for a 1951 bowman willie mays psa 5 rookie. This, along with my ryan, aaron and maddux rookies...will never leave me. as far as the rest...they will be on ebay soon as an initiative for the send me to graduate school fund.

Thats cool, at least you get to sit and enjoy the ride instead of sweating! I was just kidding about the Mantle card. A friend of mine who knows nothing about cards came across it and thought he was instantly richimage He gave it to me when I told him it was worth maybe $35.00. Anyway my mowers I use for my business cost $7,000. They are the same one as pictured on my avatar. thanks

What's the deal with both of the cards you mentioned? I don't follow Mastro so I don't know the history of the holed card. Also, I don't know anything about 67 Stand-Ups (I thought there were just 1964), why did you pay a lot of money for one?
  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
The Andrews was intentionally short printed to avoid awarding prizes- much like the '32 US Caramels Lindstrom. It is exceedingly rare- the PSA pop report shows NONE graded. The few that exist were either punched with holes like Andrew's or trimmed off the bottom, hence the "authentic" grade.
Interestingly, the '60 Fleer #80 occasionally has a huge notch taken out of the bottom of the card. One of those was graded PSA 8, with no qualifier. Does anyone know why cancelled George C Millers are graded "authentic" when cancelled '60 Fleers (with a chunk missing) get graded, and graded highly at that?

The '67 Standups are a test set and fairly scarce. '64 Standups are a regular issue and pretty common. Although they get a bit pricey in PSA 8 and higher, it's nothing like the cost of the '67's.

  • I was an avid Yaz collector in the '80s, and probably had the third most extensive collection at 1600 DIFFERENT items behind Richard Grabowski who authored, "Yaz II" (an actual book on Yaz collectibles) and Dick Gordon, Yaz's current agent. During that span I only saw the '67 Stand-Up for sale once (by Mr. Mint), but the price tag was way out of my league. It was my Holy Grail, probably the most coveted Yaz card. Richard consigned it to Heritage last year and I couldn't pass it up. I've seen other '67 Stand-ups in big auctions since, but no Yaz. Most of the '67 Stand-ups in big auctions are the proof version, not the die-cut, but the former is also quite rare.

Interesting enough is that I chose my CU board icon because the card was my biggest want. I borrowed the image from bobsbbcards who then a little while later pointed me to the auction, my heart missed a beat on that one.

The Ivy Andrews is one of the hobby's top five "chase" cards, beind the U.S. Caramel Lindstrom (two known to exist, both by Larry Fritsch) and the Goudey Lajoie. There's only two uncancelled Andrew's known and about five of the cancelled variety like mine (they also cancelled them by chopping the card almost in half.) By "chase" I mean that the issuer didn't make one card available to the masses so collectors (mainly kids) would continue to buy packs, candy, etc. in order to try to complete the set.

  • I used to spend several to many thousand on a single card, but I've sold most of those as I couldn't afford to keep too many. I think my highest now is a 1933 Delong Gehrig GAI 1.5. But, I still gotta get a PSA 7 or 8 Mantle for my 65 set...

My two most expensive purchases are my Jordan RC and Pujols RC. Both well under $1K. After those two cards, the next most expensive cards are all under $100.

I have never spent a lot of money on one card - the most is 800$ for a T3. My best buy of a higher end card, which I've shown before, is this 32 US caramel which I paid 475$ approx. and SMR is 2400$ but that's very conservative from what I understand. It was just a lucky buy.
