Tom Schiera retires his #5 Washington Set

dpooledpoole Posts: 5,940 ✭✭✭✭✭
In an oversight, nothing has been said about one of the real gentlemen of the Registry, Tom Schiera, who has retired his wonderful #5 1932-1964 Washington set, that took many years to build.

If there was anyone on the Registry who bought the coin and not the holder, BTW, it has been Tom. He has some spectacular specimens. He was good enough to sell me two of them that I needed (incidentally image ) for upgrades.

No personal crisis, according to Tom. Just moving on to other interests. You could kind of sense a tear in his eye, though.

As many of you can attest, there is a bond that develops (mostly positive!) among follow collectors in particular series. Though we never met, we'd spoken on the phone a good deal. I'll miss Tom.

I agree. Total class act. Tom recently wrote me about a coin from his collection he thought I might be interested in. He described it, priced it and mailed it. It was exactly as described. I am sorry to see him go as well, but, wish him the best with his next endeavor.

Hoisted on my own petard! Mitch surges ahead again! image

Congrats, Mitch. Which one did you get?

David: Nothing to be "concerned" about - I did not surge ahead at all. I just have a personal accumulation of MS66 graded 1955(d) quarters (started close to 10 years ago) and Tom (correctly) thought I might be interested in his.

I expect you will move into the #2 slot in the MS Silver Wash quarter series sometime later this year - congrats on the wonderful collection you have assembled.

If you were born in Denver in 1955, that would be a cool way to collect!

  • Sorry to hear this.

Tom is one fine gentleman and a class act all the way. One of the prettiest coins in my set came from him.

SHHHHHH So far I can't get past the 1958-p washington (cheapest coin in the set). But how many of them do you have? I think there might be more than two. Thanks for the cheap one.
I was lucky enouph to just get a couple of Toms under coins that upgraded my set. Just checked for them and they have been upgraded so they have moved on to another collector.

  • Tom, the Washingtons just won't be the same without your competative spirit around here.
I was lucky enough to view your beautiful set last year and thank you for all your help with mine, good luck with your new ventures.

A toast to a true collector. image

Most importantly, CONGRATULATIONS Tom on putting together such a great set. I know it took many years and lot's of fun to put together one of the finest sets. Tom is truly one of the Washington specialist. He knows the series as well as anyone. The real question is what's next???

A real nice guy, very helpful about Washington Quarters. I loved the 32-S story.

Tom has a good eye for Washingtons, and a genuine love of the coin. He was assembling his set at the time as I was doing mine. The difference was that he upgraded his set, and made it truly world-class, while I was content to leave mine in the MS64-66 range for the dates from the '30's, and all MS66's from 1940-1964. We exchanged e-mails discussing the various aspects of the series, and he steered me to sources for some of the key dates. He's a real gentleman, and I have always enjoyed reading his comments on this forum.

Good luck in your next endeavor, Tom.
