1964 silver proof set ?

Any one have any idea of the percentage of sets, that have Cameo coins in them?

Most of the sets I have seen look more like a SMS type strike.

  • In Tomaska's book on Cameos he estimated the amount to be between 14,750 - 29,000 Kennedy's to be some sort of Cameo. The book was written in the early 90's. The Redbook lists 3,950,762 proof sets were minted. That makes it 1 in 1363 (high side) sets will have a cameo Kennedy grading between a 65 and 69.

  • Oh, they're out there. Best way is probably to buy it already graded. Teletrade going prices in 65 - 67 are $50 - $150, 68 will run you in the $200 range and a 69 will cost you around $1600. I know on eBay the last really nice set with a DCAM obverse and a cameo reverser sold in the $200 range I believe.

I wouldn't dispute the experts on these coins but this number can be very deceiving. There
is a range of cameo contrast from very light to the thick sort which appears to be painted on.
Many coins with excellent cameo contrast won't be highly sought or get the cameo designation
because the frost is not complete.

If you picked out only the finest coin in 1363 proof sets, the coin would be superb. By the same
token, however, finding 1363 original 1964 proof sets would be a monumental undertaking.

Tomaska's estimates sound about right, but you have the decimal point in the wrong place. It would actually be a range of 1 in 268 sets to 1 in 136 sets. That pretty much reflects my own real world hunting experience.

That would be DCAM pricing. Cameo is substantially less.
