Disappointing submission results.........

I submitted under the April $5.00 1960's and non sport specials. I only have the grades for the sport cards. I thought they would all get an 8 with the exception of the 2 1969 cards which I thought had a shots at 9's.

  • How many people crack their disappointed results and re-submit them? I got some disappointing results too, and I'm thinking of doing just that. I'm guessing this happens all the time, and cards are finally graded at their best possible grade, then people stop re-submitting them.

Doesn't re-submitting them just mess up the population report? Also, what if the lower grade is really the correct grade? Doesn't that mean that when it comes time to sell that someone will wind up overpaying for an overgraded card?

Has anyone ever re-submitted a card they felt was overgraded the first time?

Not trying to be argumentative, just curiosity.

Yep, I don't really take the SGC and PSA pop reports too seriously. They're probably so out of whack. I'm sure the pop reports for PSA 10's and SGC 98's are pretty accurate though since why crack something that's perfect..

Yes it does, but do you think that's on anyone's mind when they have money riding on the grade?

If the lower grade was the correct grade, then, if the owner thought the same, they wouldn't re-submit...they'd only re-submit if they thought the grade was wrong to begin with. But if there's a difference in opinion, the same card just gets re-submitted until the owner decides its time to give up, or finally gets a high enough grade.

Example: A card is a borderline 7/8 card. Half the time, a grader would grade it a 7, the other half the time, another grader would grade it a 8. The grader grades it an 8. That's it, its the end. The owner keeps the card and its over.
Example 2: The same card is a borderline 7/8 card. The grader grades it a 7. The owner is pissed and re-submits. A different grader gives it an 8....and that's it...no more grading.

The pop report is screwed up...but the owner doesn't care, he's looking to sell it. PSA doesn't care, they want to make money (they are a for-profit corporation after all). The guy who gets screwed (possibly) is the buyer of the card. That's probably why there are so many complaints.

Wow sounds like you have a serious beef with PSA.

Not a single submission you are happy with? You sure about that?

My latest submission was OK...not great..about 17% 9s, 58% 8s. I did get 6 cards out of 98 that got the dreaded "Minimum Size Requirements" tag. I don't understand--if they're not willing to label it 'trimmed', then shouldn't it be graded? Not every card was cut perfectly in the '60s. Seems like kind of a cop-out. It's maddening, especially when the size requirement rejects have been purchased from the same person in the same # group as others they DID grade.

You have to have a good eye.. EagleEyeKid always posts great grades that he's received. He's really anal when it comes to buying raw which is good... his nickname on here really suits him. Great eye, the guy should be a grader for PSA.

Actually, I have only submitted a half dozen times, but I seem to always get the tough grader.

I have resigned myself to the fact that either I don't have a good eye for this, or the gods are telling me to buy cards already holdered.

    bxb.....

On the contrary, I have had six submissions come back in the last two months and I have been very happy with all of them. You just have to really learn which cards to submit and really watch for things that PSA will grade down, like snow. It can be done successfully.

Here is an example of one of my recent submissions:

  • I think its alot of luck. There are some cards already holdered that I look at and wonder "who the hell would grade that a 9?", and yet they grade other cards and I say "wow, that's much better than a 7". Some 7s are better than some 9s. But of course, if a 9 is overgraded, no one ever re-submits...wheres the undergraded 7 gets re-submitted sooner or later.

I haven't had a bad submission in about 3 years. Sometimes I think that maybe they got rid of the bad graders but I tend to lean towards the theory that I'm getting better determining what PSA is looking for.

What I thought was "mint" in the old days, doesn't mean the same today. On the other hand, certain flaws with a card that would have prevented me from submitting it in years past, now don't bother me because, by experience in submitting, I know PSA will not knock off for them.

I have been meticulous about looking for the hairline creases, nothing worse than hopng for a 7 and getting a 2!
