The PCGS Registry Set Forum shouldn't be used for BST purposes

Please don't flame me, but I've been noticing more and more BST type threads on this forum. I think it would be more appropriate if those threads were not placed here and placed in the BST forum where they belong, even if the coins you're offering up are "Registry Quality".

The Registry Set Forum has thus far been a more pure forum, in that collectors here can discuss issues that pertain to their registry sets, etc. Having said that, I think as part of a Registry Set Forum thread it is fair game to ask other collectors, who share your interests, if he or she has an extra of a coin you might be looking for, and conversely it's also fair game for a collector -- as part of a registry set related thread -- to suggest that he or she has an extra coin that a specific individual (having posted in that thread) might need/want.

However, I don't think it's acceptable to have Registry Quality PCGS Proof and MS Coins on BST Board type message titles in the Registry Set forum...no offense to whoever posted that thread. Everyone that patronizes this forum is well aware of the BST forum -- only a drop-down box selection away.

Best, Mike.

No, this board is NOT the BST board. The PCGS board is for PCGS registry discussions, and was created as such.

This has come up a number of times over the years, and my overall impression is that
there are many people that like to see some quality coins offered here. "Registry Quality"
is a loose term as anything in a PCGS slab could qualify, but I don't see where there has
been a great deal of abuse in allowing items for sale here. PCGS has taken the position
that they'll let this board be self-policing for now in that regard.

Obviously, if every dealer put their inventory here and TTT'd them once a day, that wouldn't
leave room for other discussion, but that just hasn't been the case, in my opinion.

I do believe it's particularly suitable for a collector to make an announcement post when they
decide to sell one of their Registry sets, whether it's being offered here, on eBay, or through
a dealer or auction house. I did that when I sold my Jefferson set, and there is probably a
few people that were able to buy coins directly from me and improve their sets - they may never
have seen my post in the BST.

Posting comments like "who cares, it's all junk...take it to the BST" to someone's "Registry
Set for sale" post is just silly. Go dig up and revive an old, quality coin thread instead!

IMHO, discussion on selling PCGS Registry Sets or Registry Set coins is not actually offering to sell such sets or coins. The conversation could be "where is the best place to sell PCGS Registry Sets or Registry Set coins?" or "how do you go about determining the ask value on a PCGS Registry Set or Registry Set coins?" or "I have XYZ PCGS Registry Set or Registry Set coins, how much would you guys think I should ask?". I don't think the conversation should be "PCGS Registry Set or Registry Set coins for sale". I believe we have a Buy, Sell, Trade Coin forum that really should be used to Buy, Sell or Trade coins (including PCGS Registry Sets or Registry Set coins).

Personally, I would like to see one and ONLY ONE thread used to capture all of the BST within the PCGS Registry Set Forum. A ttt reposting of stuff for BST should not be more than once a week by each member so that we don't clutter up the thread with meaningless ttt's.

By doing it this way, everyone buying or selling gets to post on one thread which is easier to view instead of scrambling from one thread to another. Also it saves useful information as that thread could stick around near the top for a very long time.

Furthermore has anyone ever thought how much time it saves if you do not have to click onto each thread to see what is BST???
I suggest copying and pasting exactly what you are BST so that the viewr does not have to click a second time just to see what is BST.

Where's Mitch when we need him?

Hey, its been almost a week since I posted my new "set intentions" and not one offer from a seller yet. What gives??

anyway, back to the issue of this thread: it's the new guys. those of us who have been here before -- and for a long time -- know the value of this forum for BST.

I am in complete agreement with Solid. I love the opportunity to buy coins from other collectors who are selling their sets. More than once I have missed the chance because of the huge amount of items being "advertised" on the BST. I collect Jefferson Nickels and am an active buyer. If someone was breaking up a set what is the harm of anouncing that on this forum. After the announcement then the details could be listed on the BST. -Just my opinion and long live democracy!!!!!Don/mademan

The Dark Side folks have a very nice weekly thread every that offers coins for sale to members either outright or on Ebay. I have often wondered why this forum and possibly even the US coin forum does not have the same weekly type of thread. One thread for all of your shopping needs. What a novel idea.

Of course they have a few SSP threads that has the SSP right in the title so you can open it if you want or just by pass it.

More than once I have missed the chance because of the huge amount of items being "advertised" on the BST.

And it will soon be the case here. Except not only will you miss the coins you are interested in, but you'll also miss any interesting threads actually discussing the coins and sets. They will be overwhelmed by the spam threads.

Do you honestly think that once it's accepted, that it's not just gonna turn into a second BST Forum?
  • I truly value threads that let me know when someone is going to be selling their Registry Quality Lincoln's and I was here when this forum was asked for and given to us for this as one of it many purposes. New guys need to read old threads. Just my 2 lincoln's worth so go ahead and flame me, I can take it.

Actually, this can be a pretty sleepy little forum. Excitement does get stirred here by some quality coins coming available, though, since most of us are dealing with the special coins that don't come along every day. If someone is selling a set, or if someone has some high quality coins that I'm seeking for my sets, I want to know!

The BST Board has everything, and I find that I rarely go there, just because most of the items for sale there are not what I'm looking for. Instead, I'm seartching the auctions and the websites of the dealers who specilize in what I'm looking for.

It is a great help to me to have people post that info here. I've gotten some very nice coins that way, and I appreciate it.

I've made the point when this subject has come up before, that the forum has always been prettyt good about self-policing. My recollection is that if an exploiter comes on here, he gets flamed mercilessly and to a crisp.

And just to illustrate the positive aspects of what I'm saying, did you guys know that Tom Schiera has retired and is selling off his spectacular Washington Quarter set, ranked #5? He has NOT been putting this info up on the BST Board.

The man has some absolute stunners, too. He was good enough to let me know, and I did acquire a couple of them. He is selling them off privately at a pace comfortable for him.

This is a great forum and has many of the best threads on the web.
