Am I dreaming?

Or did I really just buy an autographed Bench rookie card for $62?

True, the condition of the card is crap. But to me that's almost irrelevant. It's a real '68 rookie card signed by Johnny, and certified in a slab. It's signed in ballpoint rather than Sharpie, which indicates it was likely autographed back in the day. Too much to hope he signed it in '68, I suppose, but perhaps in the early '70s. When did Sharpies come on the scene as the standard autograph pen?

Maybe only a Bench collector would think it was a good buy, but I'm thrilled. Many modern auto cards cost this much, and to me the VG condition doesn't matter as much as the OLD rookie card with an apparently OLD signature.

I'm glad you are happy with the purchase. That's what's neat about this--finding real stuff that means something to you. Opening up the mail gets to be like a little Christmas morning every day!! Congrats!! I've always liked Bench.

Very cool item.. I think you got a great deal. I love items like this.

Sharpie was invented in 1964 by the way but I don't think it got big untill the 70's.

Actually it was over $200. image I guess I was the market for this item. I had nothing to compare it to except the Topps Originals reprint auto that went for big bucks. I see the underbidder was davino, who's not a Bench guy as far as I know. Anyway, it will be one of the prize pieces of my Bench / Reds memorabilia shrine.

I am not a die hard bench fan, or a reds collector, however I would have "impulse bid" on that baby! I would a a VG 3 RC would be about that price, and his auto is very nice!! Congrats, that is probably a true 1/1!

That is awesome! And I agree about the little Christmas when the mail comes. I used to work at home and see the mail person everyday and she got a kick out of seeing how excited a grown man got to get a package in the mail. This is the best hobby in the world.

I think that is a nice pickup. You would have had it for only $51.09 if our friend "davinonyc" hadn't placed a bid.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.
