How to detect trimming ?

Does anyone know what the mean when they say the edge is squared so it must be trimmed ? I was reading some posts on the net54 board concerning pre war and came across this post. I did not know that there were different methods for cutting cards. Shouldn't all have square corners ?

POST (PRE WAR)

Well, the bad news came today - SGC did not grade the card - evidence of trim. When I called them, they stated that both the top and bottom concerned them (despite the fact that the card measures correctly). They stated that the cut on those edges was flat/square and not rolled as they would expect to see. Other than that, I was not given any definitive word.

So, not really being interested in a trimmed card in a psa holder, what are my options? Ive contacted the seller who refused to accept a return (states the card was consigned and the owner already paid).

If I sell it, would it be unethical to simply list it w/o disclosing that it was rejected by SGC (but of course answer any
direct inquiries honestly)?

  • I'm guessing that the edge is perfectly square which is unlikely given the card is a "3". You would expect to see a little rounding of the edge on the top or bottom side. If this isn't what they are saying about rolled edges, I'm of no help.

    Good luck,

They only way I can really see trimming is if the edges are not all equal, or there is an obvious wave to it. If they are toned and one edge is crisp and cleaner I would suspect trimming. Some say you can hold it up to a blacklight to see if an edge glows, but I've never done that.
