Just got my MS66* 1881-S Morgan back from NGC... now what caused the toning?

I just got this sucker back from a crossover at NGC (ANACS MS66 --> NGC MS66* image)

At Baltimore, I showed this to TBT, who said he thought the reverse to be, possibly, endroller, not a bag toner as I had first figured (I hadn't thought about it much... and then I sent it off)... it's got bag colors, but the line at the top could be from a fold--whether from a roll, or in the bag itself. So, what do you think of the source of the toning?

Edited to add: It's obvious that the obverse was in a bag, based on the very thin crescent.

It's good to have this one back home... blazing and colorful image

    Beautiful!

It may be an endroller, but I don't think so.

I actually like the obverse better than the reverse.

I would vote bag toned- and it's a really spectacular morgan! image

I think it is end roll.

Definitely a nice looker. It is not bag toned. This is either an end roll, or album toner, or perhaps both.

  • Nice. I saw some similar Morgans with deep, deep blue and violet toning today. I liked to toning so I shot them for my personal archives.
  • Wow. I think my eyes just went into some kind of optic shock. That's a beauty!

Jeremy, did you send that one economy? How is their turnaround time now?
  • airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,302 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Eric,

It went in at the end of March... it was done about two weeks ago. This was an earlybird image The economy submission was done at the same time... so much for faster turnaround image

Sounds like their volume is increasing. I just sent them a bunch of GSA CCs.

It was common for both banks and coin dealers in the fiftys to take the large mint bags, run the coins through a counter and put them in paper rolls. The rolls were then just stored back in a canvas bag. I'd speculate there's 2 generations of toning going on, both in a bag, but the later one as the coin was at the end of a paper roll. Rare coins didn't often get dumped back in bags, but the common S/O mints did after counting and rolling.

It's you good fortune too IMHO.image

Yet this one picked up about zero contact marks... does this explain some possible reasons for many bag toners to be very chattery (apart from them just being jingled in bags)?
