yeah........how about i buy one freaking case TOPPS at 500 smackers and out of that i get 300 cards of only 12 different guys..........thats abotu 25 or so of each of them..and NO BARRY BONDS...NO RANDY JOHNSON....Yeah thats "F'ing" ordinary there Topps!!!!!!!.....
WHATEVER!!!!!!!!
So i had called....they said theyd give me random replacement.....
my so called random replacement was 300 base cards without a bonds, without a randy johnson...and with NO hint of an SP. I had been hoping to get a few SP's to help out a few board members with there set.....SORRY STONE...I GOT NADA..
Many people are very happy that when replacing base cards topps sweetens the deal by throwing in a few SP's.....Granted those card are damaged....mine werent...but getting 25 each of 12 common base cards in only 8 hobby boxes STINKS.....i was only 60% to a base set after my case...other people had 3-4 each of everyone....
ONE MORE YEAR TOPPS...THEN YOU CAN SHOVE IT....Bring on the 57's.....

maybe ONE Bonds or ONE Randy Johnson like I asked for would have been nice ..........
thanks envoy for sending me a great Bonds and Johnson free of charge a few months ago.
you know i feel bad....i mean it sounds like i wanted a free handout.... I just wanted a moment of joy instead of all that crap i went through when i orginally busted my case to find OC SP's....and 25 each of 12 commons...60% of a dag on base set...and im out 500 bucks......
I MEAN AT LEAST give me ONE bonds and ONE Johnson like i request.....and a few SP's wouldnt hurt to bring me back for next year (which i would anyway).
GREAT JOB TOPPS......SATISFIED CUSTOMER HERE
I probably spent less than 1000 and this year probably less than 750.
Topps knows they have a winner here and that people will continue to buy it, but once a collector get screwed once he will not
be spending as much the next time around.....that will keep going down and down.
I guess topps doesn't think that real heritage collectors will abandon pack and only buy a set on ebay. I think both mike and I can
say that this year, it would of been much better for us just to buy a compete set on the bay and save the money on buying packs
and pulling crap. Some people here had huge pulls, but it seems like every year those huge pulls get less and less.
Topps will be sorely mistaken if they think they can offer us poor quality, poor coallation, and poor customer service, and think they can
get away with it. There are other ways we can spend our money. Thanks for the words of caution, it seem like the best way to send
in cards for replacments are send in only a few sp's at a time to make sure you get sp's back. The base cards are anyones guess.

NOT EVEN A BONDS OR A JOHNSON!!
8 HObby boxes, 4 blaster boxes, and 300 random replacement cards and NO BONDS OR JOHNSON!!!! Thank GOD for Envoy and his better case..he was able to give me a bonds and johnson for free.

FLASHBACk- 2003 heritage..........ONE HOBBY Case....i am only 5 SP's away from the master set, i pulled 2 auto's....one Willie Mays Real One Auto...
ThIS YEAR WAS TOTAL CRAP....i got NO VALUE OUT OF MY MONEY. I SHOULD HAVE QUIT WHILE I WAS AHEAD in 2003.
I have about 1000 cards to go back to Topps-probably by the end of the week. If they do not come through I won't build the set next year.
I spent about 900 beans so far and am still about 100 cards away from my goal. Workng on a needs list now, in between my new/old effort at busting cases for cash.
I agree Kevin. I would have been better off buying the set and maybe the chromes.
All this and one low $$ auto, a few Flashback Relics, and one or two Clubhouse Relics. Half of my SP and Chromes have come from trades.
Then they slapped me in the face by telling me Doubles are ordinary...YEAH RIGHT
Loth
They must have had a lot more replacements this year since I only got a handful of sp's this time - last year I did much better.
LMK if you need anything else? And don't get discouraged guys - unfortunately Topps doesn't accept emails or I would email a link to this thread for them to read.
Let's just look forward to next year and another great hunt! And, Stone will be getting an HOF auto!!!!

I think word got around that people were purposely damaging cards and sending them back to get SPs.
I sent 500 back. the first batch of 250 had SPS....the 2nd batch had just base cards.

Makes sense John
I got some SP's in my sub also. Still worth exchanging for all the poor cards - I only sent in cards that were dinged right out of the wrapper or had those ugly roller marks - I did make sure they could see them!

In fact people on this very board were boasting of dinging the corners to ensure that the cards were sufficiently damaged to ensure replacement.

and saw but that was a long time ago.
As far as topps and their emails.....just cause they don't put their email addys on the website doesn't mean they don't have
email addys......its very easy to figure out!....If Ernie Banks worked for topps his email would be
EBanks@topps.com
get it?????

Sucks that the replacement cards didn't work out better for you, but blame those shady 'collectors' who purposefully damaged cards in order to try and beat the system.
I received my cards back just 7 days after I had sent them out.....super quick turnaround.
When cards were coming in roller damaged, I immediately sized up the fact that the clerks working replacement may not see it or understand it - I made "sure" they saw it. This is cardboard replacement - what is probably getting the blood pressure up here is on the side of the "investors" and not the collectors.
I personally have given away more cards than Topps "rewarded" me with in sp's from random replacement. Let's not go all narc here. It's cardboard guys.

The communication on the dinging was to insure that they knew the card was damaged, like with faint roller damage - it was not intended to be for scamming Topps. And I'm disappointed that anyone would see it any other way.
The people that have traded here and "returned" stuff were just looking for their just due IMO - the fact that random replacement once yielded SP's was a bonus/x-mas present - and over - no big deal.

I did not mean to impugn you in any way Mike. I have always viewed you as one of the nicest regulars here on the boards. Though we have never had any personal dealings, your class shines through in your posts. I had in mind a post from several weeks back that dealt with replacements from Topps where somebody talked about dropping cards on a table or something like that. I really just meant to reiterate your point - "its just cardboard, guys!" I know it is frustrating to get tons of duplicates of a utility player and not a single Barry Bonds. I think Loth really did get hammered with a badly collated case. But I think things like this have gone on forever in this business. I have heard Bob Costas several times comment on how he would pull a dozen Earl Torgeson cards before he got a Mantle. As a kid I remember thinking that the 1978 Tom Seaver must not exist, because I could never find one no matter how many packs I bought. And it never occured to me or any of my friends that we could send them back to Topps. Of course even in 1978 dollars, the cards are way more expensive now, so I can understand the disgruntlement of customers who are shelling out the big bucks. Again, I didn't mean to offend anybody. I was just flippantly responding to the person who noted that some people may be scamming Topps, with the first thought that came to mind.

Hi Mark
I wasn't directing that statement to anyone in particular - I know that there is widespread talk and people are just reporting what they hear. I was just putting a good spin on the work that is being done here.
To tell the truth - I took the quote above from someone elses quote - and wasn't aware who said it.
I didn't mean to put you on the spot - for that I apologize.
Having said that, thanks for the kind words.
mike
.... of this whole [post was to inform you all that even if you deserve true random replacement it might not happen unless your cards are damaged......they dont understand collation problems....and that TOPPS slapped me in the face. Topps specifically said to send in all 300 cards of the 12 players and they would get me what i want....i said..."random replacement?"...she said YES.
Now whoever that was didnt fill my order...and when they got MY ORDER they must have thought i was trying to pull one over on them. ... even though i took the time to tell them my whole story of horrible collation....they resonded with this: WE ALSO WANT TO INFORM YOU THAT DOULES ORDINARILY CAN OCCUR.....
DONT GIVE ME THAT BS TOPPS....ILL SLAP THE DAMN TASTE OUT OF YOUR MOUTH!!!! DONT YOU DARE GIVE ME THAT BS AFTER SPENDING 500 Dollars on a hobby case of which i had to sell several vintage cards........then went out and bought 4 blaster boxes for 80 dollars....then had to pay extra money to people on these boards and accept donations .....I pulled NO BARRY BONDS..and even requested ONE and they did nothing....
In fact many would agree from good collation that from a heritage hobby case you should get no more then 2-4 of every player....and that a base set is usually 100% bythe time your at the end of a hobby case....you DONT GET 20-30 of 12 different players only...YOU DONT PULL 4 cards of the same guy in a pack with a different guy in each box getting way to much off..one box was jose dejesus...he was in every pack and somtimes 3-4 were.....the next was kyle farnsworth....one in every pack and sometimes 3-4 were...YOU JUST DONT FIND THAT ORDINARILY AND I TAKE HUGE OFFENSE TO WHAT THEY SAID TO ME.
ALL THOSE DAMN YEARS WE SUPPORT THERE CARDBOARD INDUSTRY AND THEY CANT GIVE ME ONE CARD I REQUEST CAUSE I DIDNT PULL ONE IN 600 DOLLARS WORTH OF MATERIAL!!!!!!!! I DIDNT EVEN SAY I WANTED AN SP!!!
like i said..after 57 topps...THEY CAN SHOVE IT WHERE THE SUN DONT SHINE...
i got a feeling that back in 1956, the year they are emulating to score ALOTMORE PROFIT THEN THEY DID BACK THEN... they prolly woudnt have cared...and would have given me the player i requested after spending so much money on there product...in essence...SUPPORTING THEM.
loth
Nobody should get this upset about cardboard. I can see 100% where you are coming from, but unless you are willing to
blow off topps all together and start now, then your point is not going to be taken. Chances are topps didn't know what they
were sending you. Im not sure if you sent back some sp's or not, but if you were looking to get sp's for non-sp's then maybe
that was too much to ask. I think the collation was much better this year than last...can we agree on that? I think your case
was an anomoly, of course I could be wrong....my first 4 boxes had dead on collation, not one sp double.
Again Im not in your shoes, and Im not saying you don't have a right to be mad, but maybe you and maybe we need to start
thinking about letting other people open the packs and wait a few month and buy a set on ebay. Its a much better deal. Sure it
isn't as fun as putting one together, making the trades and making those midnight runs to walmart, but we would avoid this
kind of problem.
I would suggest to anyone that they use the customer relations # for topps instead of the customer service #. The people who
answer the phones at the CR line are much nicer than the CS garbage they have working. I would also ask that person if they can
send the package straight to them...most likely they will remember the conversation and act on it. Ive been screwed too many times
sending stuff to the regular processing dept.
The only way we can truly make a statment is to put our wallets back in our pockets and walk away. Until then we need to stay
active and well informed.
Peace be with you!
Kevin
I agree with Kevin in that your case was an anomoly. I opened around 4 cases and several retail boxes. The collation was very good. I had two exceptional cases that produced multiple SPs per pack. I put together 5 master sets and 1 chrome set. In addition, I have around 60 extra SPs. Out of the thousands of cards I went through, I found around 500 base cards that were damaged (creases, corner dings, print marks, centering). I sent them to Topps asking for random replacement. I sent them directly to a customer relations employee. She sent me 300 grey back base cards, 100 white backs, 20 inserts and 80 SPs. I think there were three things in my favor for this nice return: (1) sent original UPC codes for over 40 boxes - showed that I was a serious buyer; (2) sent the cards in early; and (3) sent directly to customer relations.
David
-looks like a few had to ruin it for all, got 6 or 7 base cards I needed though
