Is joining PSA worth it???

Did you find you got your monies worth by joining?
And would it be worth it to grade 1973 and newer cards?
Just wondering if I should join or not.
Tell me what you think.

  • The membership is worth it if you plan to submit a lot of cards. I found that it is better just to buy the graded cards you need, sometimes I can get the cards for less than the grading fees.

As for 1973 or later, depends which sport and players. Stars like Pete Rose or Nolan Ryan are worth it if you can pull at least an 8. For most cards it takes a 9 to make it worthwhile. For anything after 1980, you will need a 10.

  • If you just dabble in cards, I would not join. Can you be more specific on the cards you are thinking about grading? Players, years, condition, etc.? For someone who regularly buys and sells graded cards it is worth it, in my opinion. image

    I have a couple vintage
    69 Mantle NICE
    61-2 Fleer Chamberlin Rookie decent
1973-88 Football sets thinking about rookie
    Stuff like that
  • For me it was worth it although I haven't been submitting too much stuff. I guess having some items graded that I myself busted out of packs or obtained in trades in my childhood years is worth it for me. For some items, I know I can probably buy better conditioned cards on ebay but I guess I have some sentimental value attached to these cards I grew up with. I also enjoy some of the other aspects of the membership such as being able to look up population reports on individual cards and having a couple psa sets registered. I honestly didn't ever think about the registry thing before I started my membership but have found collecting sets/players through the registry very fun. Its neat to see how your cards rank against others that have their sets registered!

  • The Mantle is worth it. Graded Mantles sell regardless of the grade.
The Wilt is also worth it if it will pull at least a 6.
The football rookies are worth it if you can get at least a 8 for the 1973-1976, 9 for 1977-1979, and 10 for 1980 onwards.

This assumes a net grading cost of $15 (including S&H) per card.

You could (theoretically) befriend a user here, get them to send in your cards (and you pay for them) and the member could mail the newly graded cards to you.

You don't have to have a membership to use the message boards, so that is gratis.

  • Then the question is, will you recover $100 in extra value by grading? If the Mantle pulls an 8, that alone should pay for the $100 membership.

I believe the Mantle will at least make an 8 it's really a nice piece
  • If you have a few cards to grade and do not want to join the collectors club use the link below to submit without joining. Nice feature if you are a casual collector/non collector.

I think I paid 89 bucks - got 6 subs, online SMR/pops, and the SMR mag - overall - I think it's worth it - heck if I take my wife out to dinner we drop 75 bucks and the next day? A faint memory.

If you have never been a member of any grading service....it is worth the price of admission. You will get your membership fees back with the free card gradings included, as well as SMR. More important.....you will learn quickly about grading standards, lingo of the hobby and be exposed to a great deal of useful information. Then....decide if you want to renew. IMO. Regards.

I just renewed my membership after 1 year. Reading these boards has gotten me interested -- and excited -- about collecting cards again. I was really down on BB after the World Series was cancelled and my hero, The Puck, retiring shortly after that. I'm slowly getting back into the enjoyment of the game and collecting.

This is my first post to any of the boards and am looking forward to getting a set or two registered soon. I'll probably start with my already-completed '62 Topps and '63 Fleer sets. I've got complete '63 and '68 Topps sets, too, but there's no way I can afford to even think about getting all those cards graded. I have hundreds of Kirby cards and collectibles. I'm just waiting for the kids to leave home so I can have room to display and enjoy it all!

Since i have tons of cards to get graded, my 10 free subs almost paid for the two year membership alone. And now the $5 special going right now, i have 30 cards that were entered on 5/12/05 ( by the way--any guesses on long it will take to grade and get back to me?) and i have 60 going out at the end of the month. Both of those groups will put me into the profit side. So it was well worth it so far. My sub is #573713 and zip 98684. With no time table from PSA to grade or deliver i may never see these cards again.

My favorite Clint quote was where he was counting all the dead bodies on the Cart " 14,15,16,...something isn't right." Clint here's a noise and spins around to shoot a guy of the roof and then says "17". His partner says "Anything wrong?" Clint replies " No, i thought my math was off. But it's o.k. now."

You could also submit through ebay/psa partnership thing or through an authorized dealer, befriending someone here may turn out to be a problem as we have all witnessed various fiascos relating to that.
