Biggest Mistake

I have never sent anything in for grading, but I was just wondering what it the biggest mistake you have seen or had done to your cards by any of the grading companies. I did see a post were the flips were switch on two cards. Anyone ever get their card in the holder upside down or backwards by chance?

Several high-dollar BGS cards, where Beckett missed (or didn't look for) the trimming. I used to buy BGS 9's to break out and send to PSA, but no more after it became clear that trimmed and sheet-cut cards were too often getting into Beckett holders. BGS collectors don't seem to mind, in fact pay astronomical amounts for sheet-cut BGS 9.5's. Good for them.

PSA missed a surface crease on a 66 Koufax PSA 7. You have to turn the card at just the right angle to see it. He joined the former BGS 9's in my box of "problem cards." Those cards have little Post-It notes reminding me of the problem so I don't pass them onto someone else by mistake. They're all PRO 10's waiting to happen, in the wrong hands.

... if only everyone in the hobby was that honest
  • I have had several problems with PSA-graded cards. Here are just a few:
    > I sent in two gold-embossed 1965 Topps cards, which i had meticulously inspected before sending them in. When they sent them back graded, there were "thumbnail" type creases on BOTH of them in the same location--near lower right corner. And BECAUSE of these creases (each one about 1/4" long), the cards were given lower grades--a '6' and '7', where they SHOULD have gotten 8's. It took a while for them to finally admit liability, and they just gave me a "free" membership renewal as compensation, which really cost them NOTHING, but cost me the loss of value on the cards.

    > Have had NUMEROUS cards where they typed up the label wrong--spelling the player's name wrong. They had me sent them back and write on the submission sheet "Mechanical Error", which was a copout for HUMAN error on their part.

    > Just last week i sent in a 1964 Bazooka stamp for grading, and clearly marked it that way on the submission sheet. They graded it, and typed "1962 TOPPS" on it!! Totally ignored what i'd written on the sheet! Again, i had to mail it back to them, and write "Mechanical Error" (Bullsh*t!) on the submission form, to get them to fix their mistake. They said they'd give me a "free" complimentary grading to compensate for my postage expense and trouble.

Though I do not usually like to do so, I will speak up for daBigHurt, in defense of PSA. They grade a ton of cards and make some mistakes but not too many. I have sent in hundreds of cards to PSA for grading and no major mistakes. Did I disagree with the grade many times? Sure. However, once cooler heads prevailed and I took a closer look at the cards the grade given was almost always the correct grade. I wouldn't worry too much about PSA making major mistakes like you mentioned. I would worry more about you and the mistakes YOU will make which will usually be lying to yourself about the quality of your cards, sending them in for grading and then being surprised by the low grades returned. It's hard to do but when you send in cards for grading you have to be ready to admit that not all your cards are "NM-Mint" as you have always said they are! Look closely at them before sending them in. Good luck.

This is not suppose to be a thread to rip on what someone thinks is a bad grade, I ment it more for what I originally stated!

Ok, then let me more clearly say I am sure PSA has made the careless mistakes you mention but you would just send it back and they would fix it. I have never seen such a wild mistake myself and I have sent in hundreds, if not a thousand or more, cards for grading to PSA.
