I came across my old coin collection.. anyone want to help me out?

A long time ago I was given a collection of coins, and I recently came across my collection in my garage. A lot of these coins I've been unable to find on ebay or find any information on. I was hoping that you guys could help me know what I should sell each for, or any information you have about the coin.. I'll make a list of my non US coins that I've found little info on here. I've got about 200 coins, so this is only a small list.. They are all in good condition, especially for the age.

1973 Barbados 25 Cents
1967 Turkey 25 Kurus (excellent condition)
1922 France 1 Franc
1906 Mexico 1 Centavo
1949 King George VI One Shilling
1949 50 Pfennig
1870 Spain 5 Centimos
1950 Belgium 5 Fr(?) (I have two of these)
1975 Italy L.50
1971 France 20 Centimes
1987 Singapore 20 Cents
1952 5 Ore (Coin says "Norge")
1981 Luxembourg 5F
1963 France 10 Centimes
1959 Argentina 10 Centavos

I've got more than 150 more coins, about 30 of which are in Chinese or japanese, but this is a good start I guess image If you need pictures of any of them let me know, I'd be more than happy to take them.

I would suggest that you head for the library and get a copy of this:

2005 Standard Catalog of World Coins: 1901-Present (Standard Catalog of World Coins)
by Chester L. Krause, Clifford Mishler

Most of your coins are in the five for a dollar range, but depending on condition something like this: "1870 Spain 5 Centimos" might be worth more.

  • Let me be the first to welcome you to the Darkside. I recommend you obtain a copy of Krause and Mishler standard catelog of world coins. Pretty much the "bible" for world coins and normallt refered to as KM or Krause. This is also normally available at most libraries.

    1973 Barbados 25 Cents - KM#13, several varities...$.30 - 1.75 in Unc
    1967 Turkey 25 Kurus (excellent condition) - KM 892.3 - .10XF - .25 UNC
    1922 France 1 Franc - KM 876.15 fine - 4.50 unc
1906 Mexico 1 Centavo - KM 415 - bronze .50 fine - 14.00 unc (narroe dare) a wide date exitst and is a little higher in value
    1949 King George VI One Shilling - KM 876 (english crest) .10 fine - 7.5 unc - 400.00 proof
    1949 50 Pfennig can't ID it

The Krause is the best resorce for indentifying your find, there may also be a coin club in your area, many of which have a library and collectors who would be able to
help identify and value your finds.... image
  • Thanks guys image I'll head to the library today if I get a chance and pick that book up. I've got a lot of 1960-1980s canadian coins as well, in near mint condition, but from what I've heard they're too common.

Also have a lot of coins from the phillipines, sri lanka, thailand, malta, spain, mexico , belgium, the netherlands, etc.

I'll look them up when I get the book image

    Welcome!

You have already received good advice from the fine members of this forum.

You may also want to check out the 19th centruy Krause book while you are at it. The fourth edition is the newest.

Don't sell your Canadian stuff short...denominations 10 Cents and higher contained silver as late as 1968.
  • I've got lots of queen elizabeth coins, tons... from the bahamas, canada, britain, etc.

My favorite is a 1976 50 New Pence coin,

Same design as the 1969 too.
