My Next Collection-- final answer.

Okay, Ive been struggling for more than a year on what my next collection should be after selling my proof Washington set a couple of years ago, and abandoning my early efforts at high grade Morgans, MS Roosevelts, and even a second attempt at proof silver Washingtons.

My next collection will be... (drum roll)....

FUNNY MONEY.

By "funny money" I mean type coins of unusual denominations struck for regular circulation.

This will include type examples of:

1. Half Cents
2. Two Cents
3. Three Cents Nickel
4. Three Cents Silver
5. Half Dime (do I include this or is a half dime not funny enough?)
6. $2.50 gold
7. $3.00 gold

Am I missing any?

I guess the way for me to start is for one from each of the seven main denominations, and then to add the various series in each denomination.

Any ideas?

I don't think there is a Registry Set category yet for a Funny Money collection, but who knows?

cheers, alan mendelson

twenty cent pieces, trade dollars, stellas
  • If you include half-dime, then $1 gold should be included as well.

Stellas are definitely funny money, but none were struck for circulation (that I know of).

I guess you could include all the "clad crap coins"...... it's all funny money.

If you're going to include coins that no longer circulate, you could make an argument for the half dollar and all $1 coins.

Yes, I will include 20-cent pieces. Stellas, while they intrigue me, are not in my budget and I can excuse them from the set because they were not circulating coins.

Half dollars and dollars are just too common.

One dollar gold coins are a "normal denomination," -- a dollar. While two and a half dollar and three dollar coins will get a "look" or "raised brow" today.

thanks for the ideas and comments.

By today's standards, I think you should also include halves and silver dollar-sized coins too. image

Larry, we're selling an apartment building with retail space in Manhattan at 76ST and 2nd Ave (NYC) because we think real estate has had its run.

For the same reason, I wouldnt be buying a house in Malibu.

But let's talk again in six months... when the bids are in for my building and when we see the latest appreciation figures for Maibu homes.

That sounds like a fun collection, Alan. You should definately include half-dimes - just
mention or show one to a non-collector and they think it's pretty funny!

Though they are a standard denomination, Large Cents are kind of funny, too. Actually,
it's funnier that the government got us to accept small cents as the same value as a
large cent when they don't contain near the copper...

Good luck, and keep us posted with your acquisitions!

Large cents certainly would qualify as "funny money." Thanks, alan

It appears I won the Heritage Auction for the two-cent red I was bidding on.

Ahhh , please stay away from the 1868 two cents for a while, go work on the others first. image
You could add currency, $2 bills are funny and attractive.
