1971 Topps #1 Orioles Team Card

Can somebody please explain this one to me?!?!

Link to Auction

I have been collecting the 1971 Topps Set for about three years now and have never understood why this particular card always goes so high. I know that you don't see it come up frequently; however, it is not really a low population card by 1971 Topps standards (49 PSA 8s). Here are the population details:

CARD NO NAME VARIETY 1-2 3-4 5 6 7 7Q 8 8Q 9 9Q 10 TOTAL
1 WORLD CHAMPIONS ORIOLES TEAM 0 1 4 18 96 1 49 5 2 0 0 176

I would say that it was a case of two collectors really wanting the card and having a win at all costs attitude, but this isn't the first time I have seen this type of price for this card. Am I missing something?

    Mike,

I can't explain the high price, but I'll gladly sell my 8 for $225 image

#1 card, and although its not the lowest of Pop's its always been a sought after card for as long as I can remember. Even before grading, if I had that card at a show I never went home with it.

The bidding trail for the auction linked doesn't look like two collectors willing to go all out. The bid progression was fairly incremental and there were a few bidders involved. Nonetheless, it is a high demand card, a #1 card in a tough set, and the price doesn't surprise me. This is one of those cards where SMR just happens to be way off.

  • Robert,

I doubt if you would have much problem sell yours to one of the underbidders at that price. Probably to "dan84h". I am pretty sure that he is the guy who is second in the O's Team Set on the registry. There is another one Ebay right now and it was already at $80 with 6 days left in the auction. I think my PSA 7 will be just fine for a while at those prices. I will continue to upgrade the other cards for my team set until I find one in my price range.

I have to believe that Oriole collectors drive the price of this card as well; just like the 68 Tigers team card.
