Getting rid of gum stains

What is the best way to get rid of gum stains? I have tried pantyhose and I had no luck.

You're usually screwed with gum stains. On wax stains, if it is on a glossy surface (usually the front, or back of Fleer basketball stickers) the pantyhose will usually work, but I use a paper towel and Butane which is odorless and comes out as a liquid but quickly evaporates. If the wax is on the back you can usually get some off, but the stain left in the cardboard of older topps cards is there to stay. Sorry.

What was that magic potion shi!t that Mr. Mint was selling in SCD years ago? They promised it would remove wax and gum stains and not ruin the card or be detected by smell?

I think it depends on the stain.

In some boxes, the gum seems to leak and fuse onto the card (i.e. in a recently opened '81 Fleer box). In those cases, it's hopeless.

In other cases, the gum stays intact and leaves a small residue behind. Try using a cottom shirt to rub it out (for me, it only worked on the front). It didn't work on dark stains left on the back of the card.

A small dot of lighter fluid. Try it on a crap card first, but I have tried this and it worked.

I actually put a little dot of water on my finger and rub it gently on the surface (front only). Then i take a tissue and lightly rub. After doing this multiple times, it almost always works.

I was speaking of the stains on 86-88 Fleer basketball stickers. I think they were gum stains and not wax stains.

They are wax stains from the sticker being on the bottom of the pack. Pantyhose, lighter fluid, Butiain, and a host of other things will work to get the wax off since the surface is glossy.
