Newp - Large medal with ship

This caught my eye - it is large, bronze and has high relief. It is a French medal commemorating John Paul Jones.
I don't have any other data on it but it sure is purdy

This shows the size compared to another wig wearing guy

Here is what is in exurge(spelling?) below the ship "AN ORAM SCOTIAE XXIII SEPT. M.DCCLXXVIIII" The signature on the bust and on the reverse is DUPRE". F.

Isn't this one of a series of medals struck in France on the order of the "American Congress" [Continental Congress]? IIRC, there were several medals struck honoring various heroes of the Revolution. The US Mint sells these medals [restrikes, of course] in a bronze composition of the size and color of the one illustrated. IIRC, these cost in the $15 to $25 range and can be ordered from the Mint.

You know, that sounds about right - there are no mint marks or hallmarks that I can find but it could very well be what you have stated. I still think it is nifty!
