Opinion...

Some of you may remember i was buying this....

King Stephen penny, Watford type, common mint of London, but exceptional strike for issue £530.

Now that's not small sum of money for me thus, i'm having to sell this;

King Stephen penny, Watford type, extremely rare Shaftesbury mint, decent portrait, average strike, nice slate grey tone. The dealer i bought it off sold it as 'virtually as struck', nearing VF, and he wrote that on the reciept he gave me. I trust this dealer's judgement.

Anyhow I've contacted the seller of the top coin and i've asked him if he'd be interested in taking the bottom one as a part exchange for the top coin.

Looking through Coincraft, they state £220 in F for a common mint and upto double that (£440) for an RRR mint like Shaftesbury. I bought the coin a year or two ago for £340 and i've offered it to the dealer for £400-£420, do you think this is realistic?

    Without the slightest specific knowledge on King Stephen, this is just a WAG: No, it's not realistic. Dealer will not buy more than what he sold it for a year ago, unless the market has more than doubled in the meantime, and even so, it's a question of pride. I would settle for my buyprice or I would try my chances on ebay.

    edited to add that the top looks like a super coin, albeit not all that well centered.

    I don't know enough about these, but some hammered coins have done well... quite well

    It's not the same dealer, i bought it from a different dealer than i'm selling it to. I wouldn't be daft enough to try selling it back to the same guy. image

    I can't do ebay because i don't have a credit card and thus i can't set up a sellers account.
