78 and 79 OPC Box Rip Results

Well, this doesn't quite measure up to the 75 Mini rip of last week, but I got both boxes for $325, so I couldn't resist. i finished the 79 box first and here are the results. I will post the 78 results after I rip it shortly.

First, the bad news. In pack 3, last card......yep, you guessed it. A very nice Ozzie......trouble is, like every last card in this box, it has the gum stuck to the back of the card. I tried getting the gum off a few commons from other packs, but onky succeeded in ruining the cards. So, I think this is hopeless. It begs, the question - will PSA holder the card with gum stuck to the back!! Otherwise, the card is a solid 8, no better, but 55-45 centering and 3 strong corners. 4th has a little nick.

Got a very sweet Munson - at least a 9 - and some of you know I am a Thurman junkie, so I loved seeing this..
Got a very nice Rose - at least an 8, hopefully 9.
2 sweet Benches - 8 or 9s
1 8/9 of Seaver, Reggie, Fisk, Garvey
1 hopefully 10 of Lou Pinella. Amazing card
Brett and Schmidt cards are nice but was top card and has wrapper creases all over
No Ryans

Stay tuned

It's addictive isn't it. There should be 12 step programs for people like us, although I guess technically Gambler's Anonymous would work.

  • Lee, it is very addictive! The 78 box was a real success. 3, count em', 3 Murrays!!! 1 is a blazer - definate 9, I won't even jinx myself and suggest higher. The other 2 are 60-40 L-R, but nice corners. Not sure if they are 8s, 9s, or 8OC, 9OC - will send them in and find out.

My streak of no Ryan's continues. 2 Boxes of 78 OPC and no Ryan.

    Here is the rest!!!
    3 Dawsons
    3 Carltons
    3 Roses!!
    2 Ryan RB
    3 Ryan K Leaders!
    2 Munsons
    2 Bench
    1 Schmidt
    2 Brett
    2 Morgan
    2 Reggies
    2 Palmer
    3 Garvey

What an era for ball players, and what a box!!!

Who needs a 78 OPC set, and/or sweet commons or stars? Just PM me.

    Steve

Sweet box. I have yet to pull a Topps Murray in 3 wax boxes and a rack box. You rule.

I think you need to scan the Ozzie with the gum! Just get a card saver I and put the whole works in the pouch.
  • Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner......Sorry....

  • Hey Steve.
Sounds like fun, Last box I opened was a 1979 Topps Rack Box. Fortunately it was one I had from when I was younger. 1 ozzie with/out a top boarder and only 1 Reggie Jackson- graded out a 9 everything else I sent in were either 8's or 9 OC.

I'm looking for a nicely centered 1979 Ted Simmons OPC. If you pulled one, let me know if you are interedted in parting with it. Drew

Try putting a couple of gum stuck commons in your freezer for about 1/2 an hour then see if the gum comes off better. If it does give it a try with the Ozzie. It has worked on some Topps issues in the past, the OPC gum is a little different and it depends on the "stuckness" (a new word I just invented), but it may be worth a try. Good Luck, STEVE.

The most gum damage I've seen are on 79 OPCs.

    Sounds like a fun rip.

    balco757,

You paid $325 for the pair? Can you tell us where you bought the boxes? I would be interested.

I would try carefully applying some moist heat to a common or two. Maybe holding it near a steam iron, or in a bathroom with the shower on hot. This may loosen up the gum.

When you get really frustrated rent a pressure washer, take a few worthless gummed up cards and blast away.
  • jayhawke,

i am checking in with my source to see if he has more as i wanted to pick up 1 more 78 from him. PM me and I'd be happy to share his name.....and yes, i paid $340 including shipping for both the 78 and 79 OPC boxes.

sorry guys about the scanner. it's not the $$ as much as i am IT challenged and starting a new big job in a few weeks......so, i've been distracted a bit.....i also do my card stuff at work since I have 3 little kids and no time for this at home.....im sure many of you know how this goes.

Sounds like you're busy!! When you're ready to pick up a scanner - most seem to have HP - I will be glad to help you with the scan setting - whether you want to have CU host them or have a free or cheap hosting site to store/host your scans.

Good luck on your new job
