Busting '80 Topps Wax Box

I purchased a 1980 wax box from bbckid yesterday and intend on busting it as soon as it gets here. I am not familiar w/ the 1980 set in terms of error cards, hard to find cards or very sought after cards. I know there are several HOF and Rickey Henderson RC cards, but other than that I am not so savvy. I remember some crazy Paul Stanley (ie, Yankee infielder, cant remember name) or some common sold for over $1,000 on e-bay earlier this year?

I have read past threads about how nasty these cards are in terms of fish eyes, print defects and tons of other stuff that makes this year so hard to complete.

Again, thanks for input or reference points before I start busting (and I am pumped up!)

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of the party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are (a) few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politicial or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

Grade any card that has a reasonable shot at a 10 because even if it gets a 9, you should be able to at least get your money back from grading or close to it if you decide to sell. Also, keep an eye on potential 9 commons that are low pops- you'd be surprised at what some of them bring from registry set collectors. Other than that, you should grade any star/HOFer/decent RC (Mike Scott, Guerrero, Orosco, etc...) that is a solid 9 or better. Grade any 8 or better of Rickey, Ryan, or Brett. If you have trouble deciding what you think a card will receive don't worry, it's natural until you get used to PSA's standards for that particular set. Feel free to post large scans here of cards you are unsure of and we can help out. Also, when you break the box have your card savers ready and put the cards that look good from first glance in them. Then when you're done with the box you can go back and look at them with a loupe and start narrowing the field.

Warning- Busting older packs is very fun and highly addictive. You will not want to wait to bust another and you may order something that night. Good luck.

I just busted a half box of 80 topps. Some had gum glued to the back through 4 or 5 cards. Many oc's, some weird print lines, and fish eyes.. HOWEVER I did hit a Henderson, which was the closest I have ever seen to a 10. Perfect 50/50 centering, excellent focus, no fish eyes. I will try to scan it this week and have 'someone' host it for me for the public eye here in the forums. I did just like Cd said. 1st pulled all the cards I wanted to grade about 25, then went through them again. Have it narrowed down to 3 or 4 cards. The Henderson, a beautiful thing in itself regardless of grade, a verrry nice Blyleven, and I think one or 2 commons. I hadn't even thought of checking the pop report for low pop 9's where I may be able to squeeze a common through. Thanks CD! So far only 3 cards from about 14 packs, but the Hendu reallllly made my day. Then I went to the same store and bought 6 packs of 78 topps, got absolutely nothing. Not even a league leaders or semi star. I didn't know there were this many commons in the set. The only name I recongnized was Jerry Reuss! image

Anyone ever see the Fred Stanley yellow name variation from that set (card #387). The player's name is written in yellow rather than red. That's probably the card Julen23 is talking about. I've been looking for one for a long time to complete my 1980 Master Set. NO Luck.

BTW...Paul Stanley is the lead singer of KISS.
Love '83 Topps. Looking to put together a PSA 10 set.

    Julen,
I've heard the Manny Sanguillen is next to impossible to pull in very good condition. Did you pull a Sanguillen?
