Does a slide mark have to be permanent ?

I have some raw Lincoln proofs that have acquired some minute slide marks. You can only see them at just
the right angle. Is there a safe procedure to eliminate or to diminish these unsightly marks? Or am I to be
punished forever?

On any other coin (other than copper) I would say you could minimize the appearance of the slide.

My experience is that copper is very unforgiving.

There's a small chance that they aren't really slide marks but plastic or something that
leached out of the plastic. You can try acetone but if they are slide marks you're stuck
    with them.
