What is up with 4_sharp_corners?

I recently won a series of auctions from them. I don't use paypal, so I have to pay them by check. They never responded to 3 emails. I want to know who to make the check out to. I am trying to pay them. Anyone dealt with these flakes before? should I call the telephone number? Have you guys written a check out to them?

Any advice appreciated.

I would certainly call them Monday, during the day (though, I would imagine a check payable to 4 Sharp Corners would get it done). The seller is Roger Rumsey (sp?), and a Christine Rumsey has always answered my emails. They went through a rough period, service-wise, last year - but normally (they seem back to normal now) the service and delivery are extremely quick from them.

It's possible that for some reason your e-mail to them isn't going through.. Try using a different e-mail address from a different provider.. or send them messages through eBay.

  • I have brought tons of cards from all three of their sites and never had any issues. I would call them today.

The only flaky thing about them (other than having an apparently unlimited supply of unopened cases from the '80s and '90s) is that they sell from several different accounts, all of them slight variations on 4_Sharp_Corners, and they won't combine auctions among those. They say it involves "different inventories." Maybe, but those inventories all belong to the Rumsons and are sold by the Rumsons and are packed up for shipping by the Rumsons, so I don't get the problem.

End of rant. As for your problem, I don't think it's a problem. Just make the check out to 4_Sharp_Corners. You'll get your cards.
  • Flake is right on.

I sent them 3 emails over the course of a week before I even heard back from them. Then when I finally did hear from them, they didn't reference any of my emails leading me to believe that they had not even read them in the first place.

I had regularly purchased from them but after my latest experience I'm rethinking doing so in the future.

I always thought their S/H fees were a bit out of wack. $3.50 for the first card and $1 more for the next 5... and then supposedly $.25 after that. Now their trick is that they use multiple IDs and refuse to combine cards from different IDs, even though they'll be shipping from the exact same place. This to me is very shady and basically just ripping your customer off right in front of their face.

So, I didn't realize that little tidbit but did learn my lesson. Well on one of the IDs I won 7 cards so it should have been $8.50 for the first 6 and then $.25 for the 7th. Unfortunately, somehow 6 of the cards were grouped in My Ebay and the 7th was left alone. It was the same way with Paypal and I couldn't figure out how to pay for all 7 cards with one payment. So I just sent them the money for the 1 card and referenced that it was payment for all 7.

Well a week went by and I got my 1 card. This is when all the emailing began, explaining that I paid for all 7. Apparently they never questioned why they had received $30 for a $5 auction. I explained in my emails and they sent emails asking me to pay, as if they never even read what I sent them. It was a very frustrating process and I finally got my other 6 cards about a month after the auction ended. I felt like this was all a result of them just trying to milk the most S/H out of the buyer. Very discouraging to say the least.

So in answer to your question, it will probably be a week before you hear anything from them... and even then they might not answer your question.
  • what really pisses me off is when sellers don't accept paypal, but they have paypal accounts. Then when you cancel the paypal payment because they "don't accept paypal" then you buy it with a credit card over the phone anyway.

Are sellers really this worked up over the extra 30 freaking cents paypal charges VS paying by credit card over the phone?!

    I just don't get it.

I buy from 4SC's stores regularly ....it does piss you off when you win 5 cards but 3 on one name and 2 on another..and you have to pay a total of 6 plus 7 dollars shipping!!!! thats 13 buck on 5 cards....they also spread out there cards among the names so that people who want all of a certain set that is up have to pay shipping on everything......It sucks but they have the most modern commons of a set im collecting...what can ya??

They also want you to use paypal...what i dont get is when your a GREAT EBAYER and buy regularly from them...why can they not trust you and send teh cards out after they get teh check? i paid check one tiem and BOOM...had to wait about 3 weeks to get my cards...COME ON...if i was going to rip them off i would have done it before the 100 cards i purchased at there shipping rates....

What about the independant insurance company they use?
My last order from making_the_grade (4 cards for $6.50 s/h which includes ins.)
came in a box for under $1.50. No tracking, and a little post it type note inside
saying that my order is insured by so and so company.com. How does that work?
There are no bar codes anywhere on the package.....how would they track it or confirm
    lost?

Just give them a phone call. I buy several cards from 4SC, and, if there's ever a problem I will call/leave voice mail and usually get a return call the next morning. They've always been very prompt in making any necessary correction(s). Roger will usually return the call himself as well as an e-mail from the appropriate office staff.

There is different office personnel assigned to each EBAY account. I believe that's the reason they don't combine shipping over the various accounts. This may have been done to address the volume of cards sold and improve customer service. Why they don't stick to their (sport) themes with all listings is beyond me?

I would avoid trying to e-mail anyone at 4SC, unless you have a direct e-mail address!

To save on shipping, I usually try and coordinate my purchases (within the same id) to save on the shipping - rarely will I purchase (1) card and PayPal. All of my purchases have had delivery confirmation on them; however I've always paid via PayPal. The cards are always shipped properly and on time.

I have more of an issue with DSL policies than I do with 4SC. However, you have to remember that 4SC is a business and runs it as such. And, they do post the fact that they do not combine shipping across their Ebay accounts. So, you have factor this into your final bid - that's all.

where do they get tehre endless supply of well centered high grade 80's commons ???? Its the price im willing to pay not to have to find raw commons or more importantly...HAVE THEM GRADED with shipping fee's. It really all works out in the end....if u were going to have them graded...u wouldnt go BULK WILD like they do..so it would cost me 10 per card to have them graded....i usually get the cards for the set im working on between 5 and 10 dollars....today i won 5 auctions at 5,9.95, 6, 6, and 6. for 5 carsd...would ahve cost me 50 to have graded myself...these...shoot...im under 50 even with shipping and get teh cards free.

That's just crap. There's no reason they should hold cards forever when paying by a check, especially since checks now clear in 24 hours or less (new law).

Tabe, i guess you haven't heard "pandrews" response on check cashing. I have won multiple auctions from DSL and 4SH. But this last set of 5 cards that won just a few weeks ago cost me $8.00 in shipping. I was a little pissed off when i saw $2.75 on the box when the cards arrived. No insurance, no confirmation, no nothing!! Nice profit of $5.25 .

The banking law is 24 hours or less, however if you are the depositer it takes up to 3 days for the money to clear. And that does not include the day of deposit. also this is for intra state. out of state can add 1 more day.
    Good for you.

On the plus side, DSL will let you slide while you win more cards and reduce the overall shipping (the max is $8, no matter how many cards, how high the value). And if you have been a steady customer, they ship the cards right away on a personal check. If you are patient, DSL can be pretty cheap on the shipping.

4SC will let you build up your order, but their multiple IDs makes it tough to reduce the shipping. One evening I won three cards, one each from from 4SC, then 4SC_Store and 4SC_Baseball. They would not combine shipping. I guess because the cards were in three different "inventories" on the kitchen table.

Thanks for this turn out guys. I appreciate the input. I got my email answered today by a woman named Tracy. She says the office is closed on the weekends, that is why there was a delay in response. I sent emails before the weekend too, but whatever.

She said I can make a money order payable to 4 Sharp Corners-Baseball. She also said they do not take personal checks. I know it says no personal checks on the auction, but with my perfect record I wanted to see if they would make an exception like all sellers have done to me so far. I mean, the only reason a person would refuse a check is they are worried it may bounce. So, I emailed them back asking if they take credit card over the phone. I mean, they make this whole operation sound like a business, so why not take credit card over the phone? The four divisions of 4 sharp corners is riddiculous. Sounds more like what Jrdolen stated: it is the 4 divisions of the kitchen table. Is that someone's obsessive compulsive disorder expressing itself or what? Cards are cards. I would understand if someone separated auto parts from cards, but this is crazy.

Sure they set their shipping to make a profit. After all, they are capitalists and have a right to make money. They will try and maximize their profits without regard to the customer or putting forth good service.

When you sell as much as they do it's nearly impossible to keep track of when every personal check clears and to get the cards out in a timely manner. It's an extra step they choose not to do and I can understand why. Personally, I would take checks if I sold that much because it may end up costing me business by not doing so, but you can't knock them if they have a business model and they stick to it. I do hate the shadiness of trying to rip people off on shipping though.

  • I could see not accepting checks, in fact thought about it just last month. That way on larger orders I can ship right away without having to wait for things to clear. But in the end I decided I have too many regulars that pay by check and didn't want to always be making exceptions.

It would turn some people off.

  • I've dealt with 4SC for years. Through email and personally with Roger, I have never had a problem. Even recently there was a card missing from my order. I emailed them, got a response, and received the card a few days later. I had spoken to them also regarding the different accounts. It's mostly for managing purposes, but they do sell and have cards at another location. When they were under only 4SC I would sometimes get 2 deliveries of cards from different locations. I believe most of the accounts are currently managed under the Mass. location.
As for the delays in cashing checks, yes the majority of checks are processed in 48 hours. If a check bounces though, the funds can be taken out of your account up to 3 weeks after it has cleared. That's the real reason why sellers hold onto checks. i have perfect feedback and I don't mind when a seller holds my check. Like the line in The Godfather "It's business Sonny, not personal". I know my check is good. I buy from established sellers and I don't sit by my mailbox, sweating for every package to arrive.
This brings me to my last point. Off Topic, but now seems the time to throw this out to the forum. What happened all the threads and topics about collecting? This board used to be a trove of card collecting knowledge, but with the disappearance and banning of many of the original posters, it's become a virtual wasteland. How many more threads are going to be started about paying an extra $2-$3 on shipping (After the seller has stated the shipping costs in his auction). How about the infinite threads about uneducated card sellers. Not to mention the threads about big submitters getting favorable grades (Using 1 card as an example, out of 1000's of card submitted as the basis for their argument).
My point being, if you are unhappy about a card, postage, paypal, Ebay, an Ebay seller, how a seller does business, being sniped on an auction, or life in general. Deal with the issue first before running to a message board to post about it.

After reading the post about Johnson and Griffey I decided to try and find some cheap PSA 9 Johnson's and it just so happens they were from 2 seperate auctions from 4_shipping_gaugers.

  • Question to ponder about 4SC:

What happens to all their lower grade cards? With the volume they submit, there's no way in hell that Rumsey pulls all 9's and 10's. I've seen a few scattered 8's offered under their sport-specific ID's, but never a 7. Not one. And you know they must get tons of 7's back. Do they have an alternate Ebay ID they use to sell lower grade stuff? Even DSL packages their crap in to lots and hocks em on Ebay. Never seen anything like that from 4SC....
  • calleochocalleocho Posts: 1,569 ✭✭
its quite possible that they have a minimun of PSA 8 or do not grade.

80's cards in psa 7 are about worthless...so instead of sitting there with a screwdriver and opening all those holders they just get back the cards ungraded.

but really these cards are probably from sealed boxes etc...they come in pretty good shape already, an easy go around to eliminate the ones with bad centering and printing defects and the cards would be of PSA 8 + quality.

People collect what they like and spend their money as they want. But I have no idea why anyone would pay so much for such modern cards regardless of its grade, they are just so many of them. But hey they found their niche and have really made it work, good for them.

  • Calleocho....good point. I didn't stop to think that they might request minimum grades.

In the past 4sc has posted lower value cards and a few lower graded ones here: http://stores.ebay.com/Making-the-grade

But in general, they don't often go below a PSA 7 unless it is pre-1960.

4SC does NOT accept credit cards. I paid them by Money order. I hope they are happy. I wanted to send the MO earlier but I had to wait for a response to an email I sent them. They are slow on email, so I hope they don't use that against me.

<< <i>its quite possible that they have a minimun of PSA 8 or do not grade. >>

They still have to pay the grading fee, so what is the benefit of requesting a min. grade? To save themselves the trouble of cracking them out and selling them in bulk to raw dealers? If so, I would guess such dealers flip them out on eBay as raw lots, perhaps calling them "NM or better." Then some poor collector with no eye for gradiing buys the lot and sends it in to PSA, paying a lot of fees to get a pile of PSA 7 modern. Ouch!

But I doubt that's what happens. 4SC isn't even going to submit any modern card that might grade 7, and very few that might grade 8. The ones that do grade low would be flukes, bad luck, and there's no way to predict that. I'm pretty sure they only send in cards that they feel will grade 9 or better for anything newer than 1980 (with several exceptions that we could all name).
