OT: the spam emails are killing me!! suggestions?!

I have been getting the usual 25-30 spam emails a day. THEN, I asked a seller in Germany about a card he had and BAM!! I'm getting probably 30-50 german spam emails avery day in adition to my other spam emails. Is there not a way to filter this crap out?! I use yahoo dsl...

I hate to change my email address, but with 95% of all emails being spam, maybe this is all you can do.

Any suggestions?!

Yahoo does a great job with spam filtering...and it's very trainable too.

I use webmail almost exclusively...makes it a lot easier to deal with spam and changing addresses is easy.
  • Go to your spam control and make sure you have it set up so… when you click on spam, it will block any new spam emails from that person again. Also make sure you have it set where your questionable emails go to your spam folder first. This way you can check them before deleting them. Since you have sbcglobal.net you can set it up this way.

I agree with Axtell, I think they have one of the best spam control around.
  • I already have this set up and have reached my max on blocked senders. most of them do go to my bulk mail folder, but the sheer volume is rediculous. Maybe Bill Gates was right when he said maybe email accounts should come with a sending limit of say 1000 emails a month. Since most spammers send millions a month, this would cut it down some.

    Thanks for the suggestions,

This is interesting. I just started receiving German e-mails this weekend. About 12 per day.

I wonder if this is an Ebay thing, or if it's not related to Ebay.

The key is to have TWO emails. I have a hotmail account that I use whenever I sign up for ANYTHING online. Every message board, commercial site or anything else that requires an email gets my Hotmail. I use my Yahoo account for friends, family and coworkers. So, the only spam that gets to my Yahoo is from companies that just spam to random emails. No company can ever sell my Yahoo address because no company has it. I get tons of spam in my Hotmail, but that's ok because the only "real" mail I get there is when I buy something, so I can just find it when I need it. This strategy works great for me. I still get a few spams a day in Yahoo, but their filter catches them all so I maybe see two spam messages a month in my real inbox. The best part...it's really easy to do this fix. I'd recommend that you open up a new address and give that to your friends and family. Then, use the address you have as your "commercial" address. That's how I did it and it's awesome. (Plus, any old friends that only have my Hotmail from years ago can email me and I'll still see it when I clear my box once a day.)

My work email is also getting bombed with German emails, too. I've never used it for anything other than work.

Nothing German in my spam folder or inbox, but I find gmail does a bang-up job of catching spam. If anyone wants an account, PM me your email address and I'll send you and invite. I've got 50 of these babies image

AdAware is pretty useful at gutting out all the junk (and it's freeware).

Funny. This morning I read this thread and thought "what the heck are these guys talking about...." Well, now I know! I have gotten German emails trickling in all day. Sucks!
  • I have started getting the same emails. My adware blocker does blocks them, but it also block some emails I need.

  • The german emails are for an email worm/virus, if you got the mail you are on the contacts list of an infected PC, make sure your anti-virus is up to date and NEVER open any mail or attachments from someone you do not know. As far as a great spam blocker....I recommend and have my clients using a product aptly called "I hate spam" by sunbelt software, it is $20 per year but gets spam updates daily....none of my clients using this filtering software saw one German email.
  • KansasJayhawk,

Do you have a link to that site?

I use Spam Alarm, and it works pretty well for Outlook or Outlook Express. It puts the messages it thinks are spam into a separate SPAM folder. You can also tailor it, in case you do want the p3n1s and v1agr.a emails to make it into your inbox.

They have a trial version at http://www.dignitysoftware.com/?spamabuse
  • Here you go everyone...sorry I should have included this earlier....I hate spam Link

Free to try for 30 days....enjoy!

What I have found to be incredibly effective is to use my personal email for private stuff, and I never ever use that address on any web form of any sort, for any program registration, anything.

I use a rotating yahoo account for everything else, as if the spam ever gets too overwhelming, it's free and easy to change the address to something new.
