What is the haze on this Proof Frankie?

This is a 1959 pr65 half in an old green PCGS rattler holder. It has a haze over the entire surface of the coin. Can it be removed?. If removed would it grade higher? Should I try NCS or would that be a waste of time and money.

I can't speak on how to remove the haze, but I'm sure others here can.

Unless that coin is a CAM/DCAM (which is hard to tell from the pictures, but guessing not), I don't think it would be worth your time to conserve it professionally.

You could try acetone, although I'm not sure that the haze is removable. It'd definitely be worth a shot, though. image

    I agree with Nederveit
The coin does not look cameo and the potential upgrade to a PR66 is not worth the regrading and conservation cost. No significant varieties for 1959 Franklins either. So I would leave it alone.

But, if you really want to spend some money on conservation, go to the experts at NCS. They do a really nice job for not much money (you'll probably spend about $15). I am reasonably confident they could remove that haze and make the coin look far better than it does now.

The coin may not have been hazy when it was holdered Pr65. If it bugged me, I'd sell it and buy another coin. If not, I'd leave it be.

I would try sending it back to PCGS for a review. Tell them it changed in the holder. They may clean or curate it for you and then reslab it. Once you crack it out you lose the guarantee.

  • Thanks guys, your advice is always welcome. I think I might send to NCS. I have never sent them a coin and this would be a good test run for me, just to see how they operate. The value of the coin in 66 would not justify the expense, but I would be willing to spend a little for the knowledge of how well NCS operates and maybe learn if they can help me on future coins.
