it was labeled Venice........ (?)

    Looks like a medieval Grosso from Venice, Italy. From the style I would guess it dates to about AD 1200-1250.

    It is Venetian. A silver grosso circa 12th-14th centuries.

    Unfortunately the Doge's name has been obscured by poor strike or later alteration, so it can't really be positively identified to a particular time period or issuer.

    Next step i would suggest is to do a bit of historical research.

    It's a hunch, but were there any particular Doge's who were rather unpopular during that period? If so it might explain why his name has been near obliterated. Political statements and all.

    If you can find an unpopular Doge then it will be easier to compare photos of this coin with photos of coins from his issue.
