Spots on a gold coin, what to do...what to do...

StorkStork Posts: 5,208 ✭✭✭✭✭
I won this recently on ebay "totally problem free" Linkage. (It's a little silly, but this was the design that had me hooked early on and this was the first chance I had to buy one).

Anyway, here are some pictures, the lint and scratches are on the airtite.

Are these sorts of spots normal for this sort of gold coin (.999whatever pure)? Are they from the environment or mishandling? I called the seller who said no problem and return it (very pleasant on the phone image), but he went and checked the one he is auctioning this week and notes that one has similar spots. Needless to say these are the only two he's had his hands on.

If this is a common problem for these I'd rather keep it. But, if this counts as a major issue then I guess I can return it and hold out for a better one, whenever that is.

Is this a problem NCS could handle?

Thanks for any opinions.

Neat coin! The spots would not bother me, but if they bother you you might try dipping it.

Copper spots are normal for gold coins and I have found Chinese gold bullion to have them every now and then (poor quality control of blanks?). Personally, I've left my Chinese gold as is whenever I found them. Since your copper spots are on the periphery, I don't find them distracting at all. image

Very pretty stork! I would not touch the coin either. To use an inapproprite metaphor, play the ball as it lies.

I don't think a copper spot like that would dip off successfully.

You could workin' at the spot with a toothpick dipped in Jeweluster, I suppose.

But I probably would leave it be.

PS- I agree with trozau that the spots ain't very distracting, since they are fortuitously placed.

And the dragon/unicorn combo is stunning.

The spots are only distracting if you think they are. I've seen a few of them before but only on the Chinese coins.

Well, I like it for the design too, I just wasn't expecting spots. I agree the spots are peripheral enough not to be bothersome. As long as it's not a sign of mishandling or damage I'm okay with it. Thanks for the reassurances image.
