PSA 9 or not? Input appreciated....

Hello all,

First of all...please don't take this as an invitation for all of the PSA bashers to come out of the woodwork. I like PSA and think they provide a fairly good service. Just want some expert advice on this card that I recently bought. I personally don't think that it stands up to the other PSA 9 graded cards that I have bought in the past. Several print dots, a very obvious black print line across the top right corner, print line through the "R" in last name in blue, and relatively small but noticeable stain on the back. Just curious if anyone with experience with 78's can tell me if these are common printing issues and maybe overlooked by PSA graders? Thanks.

Ken

  • The back "smudge" shouldn't matter. The printing line on the front, however, should have probably warranted a PD qualifier.

The print line shows up even without the closeup. Almost makes it look like a diamond cut....

    Baseballfanatic,

Yeah, I know....I could handle everything else....but the print line is really bugging me. Anybody have or seen this card with the exact same print line? Just wondering if they all have it. Seems kind of obvious to have been missed by the grader....I am assuming it was ignored. Thanks for the input so far.

There's a lot of 1970 Topps baseball with the same light line going across the top or bottom. For whatever reason, PSA ignores this defect and doesn't factor it into grading. There are even some 10s out there with the line.

I have a bunch of Topps 78 baseball with the same line accross the top. Great looking cards too besides the line. I won't submit them however except for a couple with PERFECT centering and surface beside the line.

    Hi Ken
I have a stack of about 20 Bradshaws and they all have this print dot in the same place. Both BB and FB seem to have the same printer and dots, light lines along with some smudges seems to be the norm.

I would consider sending the scan to PSA and asking them how they feel? Or better yet, email to Joe Orlando for review?

I personally would be bothered by the print defect getting a 9. Can you return it to the seller?

The back "stain" is insignificant enough - and even the print line doesn't take much away from the card's eye appeal. I have seen many PSA 9's and 10's with similar small print lines.

  • It looks fine. image
  • As always, very informative responses. Thanks everyone. I guess it's a matter of personal taste....the print line really bothers me so I think that I will exchange the card. The seller is a well known football dealer that frequents the board on occasion and he told me that he would take it back in a second...no problems at all. That's why I like dealing with people that I trust. From the responses, it seems that the grade on this card is a matter of opinion anyway...there seems to be enough of a split that it could go either way. Like any major dealer, I would not expect the seller to examine every card that passes through his hands so that he can second guess PSA. No wrongdoing here...I guess I have just been spoiled with cleaner "Mint 9" cards in the past.

  • Not sure I would consider the thing on the back a stain.Sometimes the paper on the backs of cards can have certain small imperfections.Could have something to do with paper pulp or maybe the printing process. The line on the front would bother me the most.
  • If the defect is part of the ideal card from that set then its okay I guess.
