THE NEW PSA SUB-GRADES....THE DSL 9

I know I've been ranting about these guys and the grades PSA hands out for their huge submissions but this is getting ridiculous. I dont know maybe its just the 75 Topps (I track these all the time), but check out the PSA 9 Winfield and PSA 8 Yount closing in about 7 hours. Unbelievable. Text

It's been said over and over, but just how much can you tell of a card from a scan?

The centering on the Yount looks borderline for an 8, but what's your beef with the Winfield?

I see a nice TILT to that Winfield. Still, seems like a nice card from the scan. My beef is with 10's with TILTS ......

Surface on Yount tooks dirty but that could just be the scan. Otherwise, would you rather be bidding on a 9OC Yount or a straight 8? It is OC quite a bit ....

Wow - the tilt is quite apparent on the Winfield, and I can't imagine how the Yount gets into a holder without an OC designation (an 8, anyway). That should be a 7 at best, unqualified.

  • The bottom right corner on the Winfield looks like it's dinged....although it's hard to tell with the DSL logo obstructing it.

I'm sick and tired of hearing people rant about DSL's supposed favoritism in grading. It's easy to be fooled in to thinking they get breaks because only the suspect and overgraded cards are discussed - take a look at how many cards they have listed on ebay currently: 1122. If you would like, i could post scans of the 1000 plus cards that are graded accurately. By submitting that many cards, yes - you will recieve some sliders. You will recieve some overgraded cards, and some undergraded cards. That's what happens when you submit thousands of cards a month.

Until there is some hard proof that DSL (or any other large-volume submitter) recieves preferential treatment, I will continue to chuckle at threads such as these.

    Guys,
grading is a highly subjective art. EVERYONE views different cards in different ways. I poke fun at them too, especially 10's. BUT I know that grading is far from an exact science so I have learned to be happy collecting and poke fun along the way. If ya don't like it, don't bid!

    Amen to that, good sir!

How many of these types of threads are there going to be? I mean is it envy of 4SC and DSL that warrants this? Like the above poster states, they submit thousands and thousands of cards per month, and for every card that gets a perceived grade higher than it should, they get one lower; just the nature of the beast.
  • Well like I said I mostly track all of the 75 Topps so I cant speak to the other thousand cards they have up right now. From what I've seen in the past the vast majority of the 75 Topps PSA 9's are overgraded. I buy a lot of PSA 75's and I dont think I've ever bought a card from them because they are always low end for the grade. I wouldn't buy the PSA 9 Winfield or the PSA 8 Yount. They're both at least a grade off. This is a trend I've been following for quite a while now. Take it for what it's worth or not.

I think if one looks close, it can be seen that the actual Winfield card itself, is not square within the holder. There is a bit more "open space" on the top right than the top left.
PSA holders do allow for a very small movemment of a card, some gentle tapping of the Winfield slab would probably get it straight / square and remove the percieved tilt.

Scans are a great help, but not until the card is in hand can one really properly evaluate the condition, and as we all know, the evaluation, no matter how expert, is a bit subjective.

I think both cards are within reason for the grade they got - based on the scans.

The lower right corner of the PSA 9 may be an illusion created by the DSL logo.

In the world of 75s - with tilting worse than that, rough cuts, etc. - these are not bad IMO.

But this is PSA's Board and to directly accuse them of showing favoritism should be accompanied by a smoking gun. I have spoken with dealers who have been very disappointed with certain submissions and are PSA "regulars."

I agree - I don't think the right lower corner is dinged on the Winfield - it is the DSL logo that makes it seem like a bit of white is visible on there. I don't think this has anything to do with who the submitter is - I am just surprised at the Yount not given an OC qualifier. I could never get a good handle on this - sometimes a card that is OC seems to escape the qualifier, perhaps because the rest of the card makes up for it. My comment relates only to that, and nothing else.
