While I admire the devotion, I can't understand for the life of me why (a) someone would lose 6 weeks of their lives to wait in line for a movie (!!!) and (b) how they can just make everything stop (work, family, etc) to wait on line. And Star Wars fans complain that they are characterized as 'geeks' - it's crap like this that makes it too easy to see them this way. (On a related note, did anyone ever see the bit where Triump the insult comic dog on Conan O'Brian's show went to the star wars line for the last film? Hillarious stuff.)

I've seen all of the movies, but by no means a junkie...the last 2 were overall very poor, but people are praising this one as a great film. I suspect it's the build up, and the turning of Anakin to Darth Vader (by far the most compelling character in any of the 6 films).

I'll watch it in the theater at some point, but by no means am going to battle all the star wars geeks to see it anytime within the first couple of weeks.

I agree the first 2 movies were real bad. but this is the movie people have been waiting on for 20 years. its the first pg13 star wars movie.

no way you will see me in a line. made that mistake when i was 15 to get into a huanted house with my girlfriend 5 hours for a 10 minute walk through! man id like that 5 hours of my life back!

Are you kidding me? People are waiting in line for 2 weeks? This can't be true, can it?

What, you won't see this movie absolutely everywhere when it comes out? What about your job (if you have one, I guess) - uh, boss...I won't be in for 2 weeks because I am waiting in line to see Star Wars #whatever - okay?

How does one wait in line for 2 weeks? I am sure they are not camped outside the theater in a tent saving their spot. What do you guys mean by "waiting in line for 2 weeks." I have heard of overnight marathons....

I believe that there have been Geeks camped out in line out at The Chinese Theatre? in Hollywood? or somewhere for roughly SIX weeks now.

    Insane.

  • I just hope it is good. I find that sometimes when there is THIS much hype, it is tough to live up to it.

Hey, I don't need friends like GBG!

Simple solution...Go to the front of the line right before the movie opens and yell as loud as you can, "LOOK THERE'S HARRISON FORD, CARRIE FISHER AND MARK HAMILL ACROSS THE STREET SIGNING FREE AUTOGRAPHS." The line will clear out and you'll get right in.

So, you are telling me that people actually camp outside theaters for 6 weeks? What about work? Or maybe they have a tent set up to save their space and can leave to go for work and then return. There must be an agreements between the star wars fans about that--not stealing eachother's spot while they are at work. They must look out for one another to make sure the group does not get invaded by other fans. It must be limited to say 35 tents. Those 35 tenters protect eachother until they can see the movie together since it does not matter if one is #1 or #35, since all get in the theater that day. Nice Cooperation they have.

From what I've seen, I think they go up to 8 weeks. I honestly don't get it...I am passionate about a lot of things, but this is something that just completely escapes me. I would understand more if it were a once-in-a-lifetime showing of something truly extraordinary, but the movie will run for months and months, and then be available on cable and video. What could prompt people to give up 2 months of their lives to sit in line for a movie?

I don't think they go to work...I think honestly they sit there and just geek out on star wars stuff all day...I guess I just don't get it.

  • DeutscherGeistDeutscherGeist Posts: 2,990 ✭✭✭✭
I can understand passion, but this is beyond me. 6 weeks to watch a movie that will be showing for months on end. I think the opening day sucks because its so crowded. I want to enjoy the movie and go when its not so crowded. I guess they don't get that.

I can understand waiting in line at Toy R Us at midnight to get some free action figures when promotions for the Episode 3 figures were going on.

I can also understand fans buying Episode 3 action figure cases because they want the figures in absolutely mint untouched condition.

But six weeks in a tent with a bunch of other Star Wars fans and geeking it out over movie talk, action figures, posters, games, novels, etc....no, got better things to do.

Perhaps those people waiting in line are paid by the movie studios. Maybe they do this so people talk about the people waiting in line and generate free publicity. Maybe even get on the local news for some more buzz.

Everything I've seen is these people do it because they love this movie this much.

From the reviews I've heard, it comes down to two words: "simply awesome".
My favorite is Empire, and hopefully this one will surpass it in all aspects.

Empire is the best of all of them.
  • AkbarCloneAkbarClone Posts: 2,476 ✭✭✭
I would guess they do it for a variety of reasons.

    1. Its probably a "party-like" atmosphere, camping out with other fans and talking/eating/drinking together.

    2. The attention. They are the "talk of the town". Media coverage interviewing them--getting them on TV and/or newspaper articles that their family/friends can see and they can save on the VCR or in a scrapbook. Plus certain interent chat boards are talking about them (even if in a non-positive light).

    image

    3. Actually seeing the movie on opening day is possibly less a thrill than the first two reasons. Maybe they get a kick out of being the first to see it--kind of like how certain card collectors might prefer GAI "First Graded" cards over the same card graded at a later time.

In any event, if they can afford to take time off from jobs and other commitments, then I say have a good time and enjoy.

I ususally wait for the Star Wars films to hit HBO orShowtime before seeing them, but this one may be worth seeing on the big screen. I'm sure if I do, I'll wait a few weeks and go see a weekend matinee when the theater isn't crowded.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

If you go during the week before school lets out you get the bonus of (a) getting bargain matinee pricing and (b) smaller crowds.

Yes, that would be a better time to go see the film, but I work the traditional Monday-Friday, 9-5 job, so I will probably go on a Sunday afternoon if I see it in the theater. They do have weekend matinee prices don't they? I haven't been to the movie theater in years. With my digital cable TV package, I have about 20 different movie channels.image

I saw the movie at 12:00 noon today. No line and movie was only half full... I enjoyed it better then the first 2, not as good as the first 3 in my opionion. it does answer all the questions of the episodes 4-6. worth seeing..

Hey Axtell, I agree with you that "Empire" was the best .... still is.

I saw Episode III yesterday - just walked right up. I decided to take a long lunch, and it was well worth it.

    You agree with me? Nooooooo.

I must be getting soft in my advancing years! haha jk.

Empire rules and Hayden Christensen was a whiny little Anakin. He really did the series a disservice. I haven't gotten to see the new one yet (going on tuesday), but I am sure it cannot possibly be worse than the last 2 (they were god-awful).

I suspect seeing episode 3 will make me want to watch episodes 4 through 6 again, though...even if the versions on the DVD are quite different from the theatrical versions.

Thanks for the clip Knuckles. I've only seen it once and it's still funny
    the 2nd time around.

Saw Episode III on Friday. No more than 25 people in the theatre at the
first show at 11:15AM. It was a bit sad, and the effects were great.
A little bummed that it's the last one. Come on George.... time for Episode VII (Han and Lea's Kid saga??).
    Empire is still the best.

Just got back from Star Wars movie. I took my 11 year old son and his friend. Compared to the more recent ones it was very good. The Jar Jar Binks one was the worst. It's amazing that the 6 epsisodes have spanned almost 30 years!!!! When George Lucas came out with the first one I am sure Lucas and his fans had no idea it would take this long to complete the series.

Oh, did I mention the Yanks came from behind and beat the Mets while I was at the movie?!?! image Turned the game off at the top of the 8th as I entered the movie. I missed a lot.
