Anyone Need Any PSA 1952's? I Can't Believe My Eyes . . .

So I sit down this fine evening to enter my usual ebay searches, and what do my eyes behold. . .

I start out with the following search in hopes of adding some good buys to my modest 52 Topps Set Registry:

"1952* psa* -bowman -parkhurst -berk* -wheat* -man -redman"

Now on a good day, this will return 200 - 300 items. But no, not today. Not on 10 cent listing day. Today, this search returns TWO THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-SEVEN ITEMS, about 2000 of which are newly listed buy-it-now cards that end in a little over six days. Never mind that probably only 3 or 4 will sell at the prices listed. I'm just amazed that this seller (joesvintagesportscards_com) has so many cards. Dude could probably enter 3 or 4 sets in the top 25 with just these cards. I'm jealous!

I'm off now to see what's out there in 53 Bowmans!

For the record, joesvintagesportscards_com currently has listed over 7400 cards on 10 cent listing day, all with buy-it-nows. Guess I won't be searching for 1952 or 1954 Topps PSA cards for a week.

Oh yeah, there's no doubt the prices are completely unreasonable. He'll be lucky to sell $700 worth of cards to make his listing fees back.
  • More than $1900 worth has already been sold. I'd say he'll move $5000+ on the 52s alone.

Here is the link for interested buyers.

He does have some of the nicest scans that I've seen on Ebay. Some great cards, to be sure.

Hey jcross97, you're right, he's selling some stuff. Interestingly enough, most of what he sold are his OC qualified cards. And I agree, he's got some great cards and some great scans as well. I wonder how he would do if he listed his cards in lots of 50 or 100. It seems to me that sometimes (and I'm only talking 1950's cards), that PSA graded lots sell for more than the sum of the individual cards, especially when you consider listing fees and such (although I realize he's not spending much on listing fees for these cards).

I would gladly pay 150% of SMR for Joe's stuff - some of the nicest high-end examples in any grade. That's where I bought my 57 Mantle from. image

Buc, that is some AWESOME centering on that Mantle! image Too bad for the lower left corner? Am I seeing that right?

softy, what grabs everyone is the nice centering - even you! You don't know about the bottom left corner from the scan but you certainly can tell about the centering photo clarity. Isn't "eye appeal" the most important thing?

OH YES..EYE APPEAL IS EVERYTHING WHEN IT COMES TO 50's VINTAGE

a 50/50 centered PSA 5 of star cards will sell more then a offcenter psa 8...every time.

the only difference I can see between that 57 and my psa 7 linked below is that my example is a little more focused....actually for a 57 i dont think you can get any more focused then that.....You can see Micks face PERFECTLY ..IT COST ME A PRETTY PENNY TO ONE THIS FOCUSED...mine is below.....i didnt buy the mantle from joes..but i did buy about 10 nice 57's which he let me put on layaway.

Different strokes for different folks, but why not list the team in the title of the auctions? Would a team set collector want to go through 1,800+ listings?

Speaking of '52 Topps, here's a deal for you.

The Garagiola is one of the nicest looking cards in the set. It closed in the last Mastro auction (in March) for $646 (kicking myself).

Check out what the same card is now selling for on Ebay...

    Not a bad profit

Lothar, that is one extremely nice 57 Mantle. Do I assume correctly that it had to be $1+k?

Something went drastically wrong if someone bought that Joe G. card for under 700! SMR is like 1500?

This brings me back to the issue of eye appeal and getting a good card at a great price. I paid 120 bucks for this Joe G. and I really like it.

As I had said before, postwar vintage in 6 and 7...with good eye appeal...may be underrated since it doesn't satisfy the need for registry "standing" with the community.

Mike, I couldn't agree more. That Joe G you have there looks GREAT. I would much rather have a whole bunch of 7s from that 52 set than just a handful of 9s. I have about 20 raw 52's including Rizzuto and Kluzewski that were handed down from an uncle. They would only grade out at a 2 or 3 but I love them. In comparison, that 7 looks incredible.

and I couldn't agree more as well. Buy the card, not the holder (unless you want to win the registry competition).

I'm not trying to play show and tell - but I have to say - there are some nice 7s out there - I can never afford to finish this set in my lifetime in 7 but the cards look really cool!

    Mike,

Several of the '52 Topps cards in the Mastro auction were low. I would have loved to have picked up the Garagiola.
