MJ Roop Archive Box Information Wanted

I was looking for a little feedback from anyone who had purchased and/or seen the 2 different archiver boxes that MJ Roop currently sells.

I currently have one of these for the start of my 1971 topps baseball set:

Basic Archiver Box

And I really like it. The time has come to purchase another, and one for the start of my 1985 topps football set. I am seriously contemplating purchasing 2 of the upgraded ones:

Upgraded Box

Putting the 1971 set into these, and the 1985 football set into my basic box. Is it worth the double cost? I am going to ultimately need 4 boxes to house the 1971 set, and 2 for the football one, so if I go the upgraded box set, it's $120 more expensive. I figure for a set of this size it's worth the extra coin, but would like some feedback from those who have used both.

Ax - I only had the opportunity to view the wood box in action and the advice given me is that it is far superior to the "less expensive" one.

Yeah I know I have a special affinity for black bordered cards...not sure exactly why. And yes, it's a nightmare image All those promising cards done in by the tiniest of white in the border.

I think there's something particularly sharp about the black borders...and the fact that the 71 set is the year of my birth and the 85 football has such fond memories for me in particular just makes me enjoy them more.

My best friend at the time and I spent a lot of time (and more money) each week at the card shop buying those packs, ripping them on the sidewalk outside the shop, trading, working on getting a set together.

What really sucks about MJ Roop is that several of the mid 50's sets are 176 cards. It would suck to have to buy another box for 4 cards (since the MJ Roop boxes only hold 172 cards).

I"ve got a 176 card set in one Roop box, no problem. I've got another box with a 100 card set and a 72 card set, and there is a little bit of wiggle room. From what I understand they'll hold 172 SGC's, 176 PSA's or 180 GAI's. The difference is the thickness of the holders.

Wish they'd make a box that holds GAI graded packs.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

In the archive box I have, it fits 4 rows of 45 cards (so 180 cards). I'm not sure why it says 172 cards, but 180 do indeed fit.

Thanks for the info!!! I may have to break down and get a few boxes. I'm starting to run out of room with my current set up!!

  • also just a heads up, roop has free shipping if you order over $100 and order by may 31st. Will probably save you 10 bucks or so. I might break down and get one of those wooden preservation cases. They look pretty nice and it seems like I haven't heard any negatives(except for maybe the cost).

Whenever I am considering spending $80 plus postage on a box, I always think about the cards that I would rather have. For now, the $3 monster boxes work fine.

    Greg -

Previously, your concern has been brought forward by other collectors. I had a PSA registry member quote that he had 180 PSA graded cards in our Preservation Case or Archiver Card Box (both have the same interior dimensions) comfortably.
I will be researching this further. If you are interested in the findings please email me at sales@mjroop.com

Also, we are continuously looking to expand our product line based on collectors feedback and expect to have additional products launching this year.

    Thank you

  • Additionally, you will find that the Preservation Case is far SUPERIOR to the Archiver Card Box. The Archiver Card Box is head and shoulders over what most of our collectors come to us with their cards in initially, but the Preservation Case is head and shoulders beyond the Archiver Card Box and is certainly worth another $30. At the moment the pictures on the website do not do the difference in the two any justice. But we do stand behind the product firmly.
