ANACS->PCGS: Lincolns

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,439 ✭✭✭✭✭
Asked on the US Coin Forum but that forum often has threads go off the page quickly....and this may be something that the lincoln players here know better.....

So, I've heard how ANACS is harder on grading in some series.
We've watched Russ' thread go *POOF* about recent gradings at PCGS.

Any INFORMED opinions how a high AU/low MS Lincoln wheat cent may cross from ANACS to PCGS plastic?
(I am looking to buy the coin, not the holder, but I hate the ANACS holder and would pay to swap it)

  • As with all of these scenarios, it's the coin. However, I think that ANACS graded Lincolns do better than NGC graded coins.

    I agree with the above & further state that ANACS grades modern Lincolns more conservatively than just about anyone. As for the earlier ones, about equal to PCGS usually but with a biased to RB vs. RD when compared to PCGS - i.e. coins will often keep the numerical grade but get a color designation downgrade. That said, the cross rate is about equally split with crossovers vs. 1 point downgrades (politics perhaps - esp. on "big" coins) with the occasional upgrade (say 35% down grade/55% cross/10% upgrade).

    Not scientific by any means but my gut feel for what I've personally experienced.

    I agree 100%, I have had a few in ANACS designated R&B, that PCGS said were RED.

  • I've a few dozen ANACS slabs that I've tried to cross. In general, ANACS doesn't seem to subtract a lot for Lincolns with spots. I've got quite a few MS66RD's and one MS67RD, with spots. I wouldn't try to cross these at the same grade or even -1 grade. For problem free coins, I've probably done well with ANACS. Same grade on pq+ have a better than 50/50 chance on wheatbacks, memorials are a different story. ANACS memorial grading seems to be a bit looser in general.

    ANACS is tough on copper (in general and I am including not just Lincolns, but copper coins minted throughout the World). They have issues with consistency. I just do not think it is appropriate to dismiss a coin based on plastic... look at the coin and you might be pleasantly surprised.

    Thanks all.
    I have an AU58 in mind (versus an AU58 in NGC) that is in an ANACS slab.
    Pictures of it suck, but there is a return policy......just wondering if ANACS was, at least, a solid AU58 on this....maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.
