HAHAHA!!! I am cleaning out my basement and ran across a SLEW of old beckett's from the early 90's (90-95). One was taking a look at the 1992 cards by grade and a beckett writer said he thought 92 ultra was PERFECT and would be the 84 donruss of the 90s. BUWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA........
Mr. Beckett writer.....YOU WERE WRONG.....BUUUUWWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA

Back in 92, the Ultra set was all the rage! There were tons of inserts to include a "reverse negative" Ripken and a Gwynn mail-in offer set. Boxes were going as high as 2x retail! When the smoke cleared and people realized how over-produced the set was....well, the bottom fell out!
But, I will say - it was a good looking set with some great photos - that's when the UV coating was all the rage - but damn those cards smelled weird to me? They still do!
This Thomas card was one of the key cards in the set - it probably booked for like 5 bucks!! Now? I don't know? 25 cents?

<< <i>Yep, I went off the deep end with this one too. Did I really need 50 '92 Ultra Mike Mussina's?....... No, probably not.

How about 50 Cal Eldreds!!
Lee
<< <i>Ah yes, the talented young core of Brewers featuring Eldred, Pat Listach, Dave Nilsson, and Greg Vaughn. Where did it all go so wrong?

When guys starting selling cards by the brick! Those days are pretty much gone now, I believe?

Well, what's happened to the 84 donruss set when all the hype and overrated rookies disappeared?
Actually he was dead on...except for not the reasons he thought.
Lee
<< <i>That was in the early days of glossy coating when they used formaldehyde.

Wasn't that what they called UV Coating? Have no idea what that means? And as Perry said - sniff that sh!t and you'll get high as a kite!

UV coating is a varnish (glossy or matte) that is spread onto the paper stock, which is then run under a UV light to dry and cure it.
All of this is done during the printing process, resulting in a dry printed and varnished sheet being produced.
I can't complain too much about '92 Ultra today. As mentioned in another thread, last week I pulled a '92 Gwynn Commemorative buyback auto, # 5/6 from a box of this year's Fleer National Pastime.
