    1878 Morgan Dollar

7TF - the eagle on the reverse has seven tail feathers, also known as the "B" reverse. This is a design change from 8TF during the first of the production year, which is called the "A" reverse.

78 rev - 78 reverse. There was yet another significant design change sometime during 1878. This design is known as the "C" reverse, or "Reverse of 79" since it came into predominant use in 1879.

So, that coin is a "B reverse."

It means the eagle has 7 tailfeathers; the first coins were minted with the eagle having 8 tailfeathers which is not correct. Reverse of 78 is characterized by flatnes of the eagle's breast and the topmost feather on the arrow in the eagle's claws is parallel with the others.

  • Thanks for the info guys. Interesting reading. There is one for sale for $270 in MS63 grade. Nice looking coin. I had no idea on the history of the coin, so I came here and was well informed. Thanks again.

$270 sounds pricey. Look for a 64 in that price.
