1953 Topps vs 1952 Bowman - Pros and Cons on both

Hi Guys, I am currently working on a PSA 5/6 1953 Topps set (about 100 cards total) but I have always liked the pastel colors and the historic background of the 1952 Bowman cards (Bowman vs Topps of 1952). With my 1956 Topps set taking most of my card budget, I don't have tons of money to throw at either. I might have to make a choice if it comes to that so I'd like to make an informed one. I would be interested in hearing some pros and cons on each set from some of the experts on this board. Any advice or constructive comments would be helpful. Thanks, Neil

Go with the 53 topps. Its a classic design, always rated as one of the most beautiful sets out there, and has possibly the best Mays card out there - along with Paige and one hell of a Mantle.

That's got to be the nicest '53T Mantle PSA 7 I've seen. Somebody was a fool to let that one go!

money wise i would do the 52 bowman.

But 53 topps clearly beats out the 52 in both player selection and artwork. It just has great eye appeal and its a classic. A top 5 set for post ww2 baseball cards sets.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. I checked for PSA 5 and 6 1952 Bowman cards on ebay today and didn't find many available. Are these grade levels hard to find or does this set come and go in cycles? I am very concerned about wax/gum stains. I know that PSA 5/6 cards have some problems but I don't think I can live with wax/gum stains or print lines across the card. My primary concerns are no wax/gum stains, decent centering (60/40 or better), reasonably white borders and no print lines. I would like a minimum or rough cut/chipping but will decide later how little. I am really not too concerned about the corners but is this enough to give up and still have the cards be 5/6 grade and 5/6 prices? I suppose that I'll have to see for myself once I can get some in to really look at closely. Neil

Love those old cards, they are like mini pieces of art.
