a PSA 5??

Any thoughts on why this card graded a 5? I'd expected a psa 7, at worst, with 8 a possibility. there are no centering, corner or major surface problems I can find that would warrant such a low grade. the card came from a sealed box. An ozzie smith from the same set that I thought had an outside chance at a 9 came back an 8.
Thanks for any input!

Can you rescan it so we can see it better? If you rescan it with more resolution and don't have a way to host it, email it to me and I will host it for you.

There must be a small surface wrinkle in the card - or a tiny crease. Try holding the card at an angle under bright light - and I bet you see it.

The 82 TT are notorious for surface wrinkles.

  • hey guys,

sorry about the small scans. I'll try to get better ones posted. thanks for the suggestions too. I guess there must be a surface wrinkle somewhere but I'll tell you, I haven't been able to find it. I didn't know that issue had wrinkle problems.

Here are the scans that I hosted. They are too large to post directly. So I have provided them as a link.

    82TT Ripken front:

    82TT Ripken back:

Here's a raw copy I have to compare with what may be a surface imperfection on the graded Rip. If you look under Rip's elbow, on the graded, you will see a large yellow fisheye-like imperfection that if it has taken the gloss away - that could drop the grade quite a bit.

There is no such print error on this copy:

  • hey mike,

thanks a lot for your help! that yellow print defect on front is why I was prepared for something as low as a 7. I've seen that type of defect and worse on 7s and 8s. I may just end up cracking the card out and trying again (I'm in no rush). I'll think twice, though, in the future about sending in cards from sets I'm not familiar with.
