As most of us know here, this is the third listing for the card.

The first listing sold for $8100. but bidder did not pay.

Second listing got no bids with starting price of $6999.

This listing has taken off........Seller has gotten lots of media attention. There was an AP article in my local paper about it plus the card is on the cover of the upcoming issue of Beckett Baseball.

Don't be surprized if Golden Palace casino buys it.

Wow, that first non-paying bidder was really a blessing in disguise!

I have no idea what this will go for, but @ $23k it's already a nice little profit on the box. image

if you thought 23K was a nice return, how about $101,500.01? High bidder has only three transactions to choose from - those have closed at $0.99, $189.99 and $9.41 - all of a sudden he wants to plunk down $100K on auto? Yikes!

That must be a fake bid, can't believe he is going to pay that much.

I'm sure he just wants to feel like a big man on campus and you can bet he's probably sitting at home sweating it out, waiting for someone to outbid...hoping someone will outbid him...praying someone will outbid him.

Imagine the press if it actually sold to that guy and he didn't pay? Or to whoever the high bidder ends up being? My guess is it will get listed at least one more time and sell for half this amount. Just like the 1/1 Bron/MJ logoman from Exquisite last year.

does anybody regret not snagging it at $6999? regardless of fake bids or not, i think the guy will be able to get a helluva lot more than 7K from somebody..

If he winds up becoming a "Saint" - that price may seem cheap? Did he sign much stuff. I was talking with someone who is going to the Vatican this summer and is part of a group which will be meeting with the Pope. I told her to get me an autograph! image

Isn't the new Pope quite old himself. This might be a good time to get an autograph of the new pope.

    You got it Koby
I was kind of joking with her but my feeling it that she would feel it "improper" to ask for his autograph?

my aunt and cousin, in rome, were the popes personal nurses when the crazy turk tried to kill him. they sent my mother a bloody gauze pad with the popes blood on it (actually several of them). i should get it dna'd and sell it on ebay. if his autograph is selling for 100k now, can you imagine what would his blood would be worth when he's a saint? matrix

p.s. dear God, i'm only kidding about selling it.( but i would trade it for a psa 10 mantle.)

I think you are entirely wound too tight on this one. First of all, no one said anything about buying and selling the autograph. As it goes for me, I am a collector and not a seller - I would rather give someone here a present rather than take the time to sell.

Discussing the opportunity of getting an auto at an optimal time is part of what a collector does - but what the hey - hell is for heroes.

I do see your point tho - there may be the potential for irreverence here - but that was not the intent.

I don't think, neither Koby nor I meant anything by this talk.

Sorry, my sarcasm often doesn't show up in the written word. I'm not religious in the least and you could go off spouting blasphemous things all day long and it wouldn't bother me. I just thought it was funny that you guys were talking about getting the new pope's auto before he kicks. Kind of like when sportscard collectors pick up auto's of guys when they're sick. I always thought that was funny.

That's fine with me Lee - I just don't want to take the chance of offending anyone here - there is another forum where people got all bent out of shape about Pope jokes and stuff.

I'm a RC and can take it with the best of them - heck I posted on another forum this:

I thought Mondale looked a little like the Pope - so I mentioned he finally "got a job for life" LOL

BTW, if you want your irony to reach the audience for sure - give one of the "big grins" or something image
Most will get it then IMO and not see it as a shot.

    mike,
I'd love nothing better than to use one of those icons, but a few years ago I took a vow to never use any smileys. It's been a long road, but it will be worth it in the end.

What happened with this? Wasn't the bid up to over 100gs on Friday? Did a bid get withdrawn? Or am I just confused again? Still, looks like a missed chance to turn a $65,000 profit.

The winning bidder has a history of very small card purchases....I checked about 20, and the max win was $20.

Odd that this would go for so much.

There were 14 bid retractions or cancelled bids. Some over 1,000,000.00 and one for over 20,000,000.00.

They probably all would have been NPB anyway.

I would say someone withdrew a bid? Still 72K aint bad! Especially for something pulled out of a pack!
Personally, I can't see it being worth that kind of money.

I hope we get to find out the final disposition of this card. I find it hard to believe that any of the five-digit bids are for real. The Vatican should've bought it or something. Traded a couple Benedict XVIs, a John Paul I, and a Pius XI for it or something. Or bestowed a permanent Papal blessing so that, like, no matter what, your sins are automatically forgiven without having to confess or anything. So he'd have that going for him, which is nice.

    Lee,

That sounds like an interesting story. Any more details? Or are the smileys and such just too cutesy for your taste? I am amused at all of the popular abbreviations my jr high kids use with their IM buddies ... they go way beyond LOL and IANAL!

I'll bet the vatican is sitting on 100,000 PJP2 autos waiting to sell and increase revenue for the lawsuits without selling the coveted jewels.

I heard that JP2 didn't do too many shows, and when he had his weekly audience he didn't sign very often. There were so many people in line he only had time for one sign......that of the cross, a symbolic auto if you will.

Now for the really irreverant joke.....VU (Vatican Used) bloody gauze?
