I just had this coin graded/certified by PCGS last week...made MS66 on the first try. If you're at all familiar with '55-D's, that should tell you something, as this coin is next-to-impossible to get in a 6 holder nowadays. This coin is as nice as any '55-D I have ever seen. It has nice, original light rim toning on the obverse (attractive, not ugly, as seen w/ the majority of '55-D's) and has super-nice luster. Technically, this coin is a higher-end 6. There are no large, distracting marks anywhere on this coin. The reverse has an overall light violet tone...very attractive coin. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of it, but I will guarantee a 10 day no-questions-asked return if not satisfied. My price is $650. delivered...no, it's not cheap, but this is not an average '55-D. In my opinion, it's unlikely you'll find a prettier '55-D any time soon, and this coin has lots of eye-appeal. I'm offering this coin to board members first. This coin would be a very nice addition to any high-grade Washington collection. MS66 pop. is only 111.

I'm sure it's a nice coin, but I have one in my set that is, in my opinion, very under graded, but I only paid $400.00 for it.
I have seen several others sell for less than $450.00 in the last few months.
I don't think I would ever pay that kind of money for an MS66.
In fact, I just lost an auction on Heritage, for a P Quarter in 67 that sold for 1200.00 with a POP of only 20.
However, you have to understand, all we had to go on, before this, was a description that sounded like any hype you would see on ebay and a holder Graded MS66. Without a picture, or the opinion of a well known "Expert", it's kind of hard to see anything beyond the hype.
For those of you who don't know me, I have collected Washington quarters for over 20 years. That doesn't mean I'm automatically an expert, because I'm not. But I'm not a novice, either. I do, however think I have the ability to grade a Washington quarters with some accuracy, and can usually spot a nice coin when I see one. My objective here was not to "hype" anyone. I was offering a PQ coin at what I considered a very fair price. 1955-D Washington quarters usually look like crap, plain and simple. This coin was a true exception. And yes, I was proud of the coin, as I found it at a local show recently, and it certainly stood out as a really good coin. Fortunately, PCGS also thought so. It's nice when a guy can do that once in a while.
I'm not here trying to "pat myself on the back", saying all my coins are great....I'm sorry if it sounded that way. My objective was to simply describe and offer a very nice coin to someone who might appreciate it for what it is, with a chance at owning it... Like Craig said, you get what you pay for. I wasn't trying to juke anyone.
Best regards,

I personally don't see any fault in your presentation of this 55d or in anything that you have said or done. Those that truely know the Mint State Washington series will realize how tough a Superb example of a 55d truely is. As you have indicated and so shall I, the 55d Washington is typically a bagmarked hit riddened eyesore with drab toning. Super nice 55d's that are knocking on the door of Ultra Gem MS67 are extremely scarce. IMO making the upper end 55d's in MS66 holders worthy of a premium.
I continue in my quest of seeking to be the one that brings a MS67 to market. I have searched countless numbers of Washingtons, in Mint sets, rolls, single coins in various shops/shows in various parts around the Country. I continuely encounter many beat up eyesores that will grade no better then MS64. I am by no means a expert in this series nor am I trying to be, however, I know a GEM coin when I see one.
Good luck with the sale of your coin, and it would be nice to see some images of it....
