Many collectors here wonder why to slab coins. Well, if you are selling it may well be worth it. This coin sold tonight. I had previously listed it unslabbed and it received no bids.

I finally agree with you Don. There are so many people buying world coins all of a sudden who cannot grade them that they will only buy if slabbed. As an ardent anti-slabber I am going to capitulate in favor of slabbing if you want to sell the coin, particularily if its an ancient, where counterfeits abound.
Glad you sold it at what I hope is a price you could live with.

For me resale is not so much an issue at this point as I have not yet begun to dabble in anything prior to the mid 19th century as of yet. With the recent spate of fantasy pieces and counterfiets showing up recently not to mention some of the heavily cleaned Queen Victoria pieces I have seen as of late would have me leaning towards holdered coins if for no other reason than to keep a genuine coin in original condition. 'course moderns are a different matter ...

But did you list it as $0.99 with no reserve? I would have bid at least five bucks.
I'm glad that worked out for you. I won't slab ancients (we have enough of a reputation with ancients that we can handle them raw without problem). However, I am definitely noticing a trend of higher prices realized for certified world coinage. I know for a fact that people here have bought some of our material and had it slabbed with some pretty impressive grades (and hopefully for them, prices too). Of course, sometimes it's a wash after the fees, so the trick is knowing which to slab I guess. A wise dealer told us the other day, "You can only sell a coin once." True enough. May as well maximize on the sale because the collector can always crack it out later.

It keeps my employer happy, and subsequently keeps me happy.
<< <i>Nice Don, is that a strong price for that one?? >>
Don gave me a penny for that coin when I sold it to him!
