Heritage just sold an 1896 Liberty Nickel in PCGS MS66 for $19,550!! which blows away any previous sale records for this date in same grade. In the same CS auction an 1896 in a PCGS MS65 holder reeled in $6,325 with buyers fee.
There is a new player who just showed up in the top 5 for the registry battle. Welcome to the "Kensey Collection" rated #4!
This series is a tough and exciting one. I am delighted to see more players joining in on the "fun" with mintstate Liberty nickels.

Today, the last 3 sold at auction brought 9,500 to 13,000.
Frank Thomas bought an 1895 in PCGS 66 less than 5 years ago for 2500. It is the nicest 95 I have ever seen. Today ? Maybe 15,000 or more.
The key dates in the series are getting a substantial bump. There has not been a PCGS 12-S in 66 sold for years. My guess would be a sale today will bring a lot more than one might think.
<< <i>Does that mean that the Carnton Collection coins are going to be for sale soon? >>
Carnton is "BUYING" I hope more quality specimens appear in the future. This 1896 is one battle we didn't win.

My congratulations to whomever it was who beat me out.
Just Having Fun!
Oreville,
I was thinking the same thing. Over a million just a few weeks back and still with plenty left to burn. I'm glad he's just having fun.
