Just When You Thought You Had Seen It All In Fake '52 Mantles . . .

I don't even know where to start with this one . . .

50 year old reprint?

THIS MANTLE PROBABLY IS ONE OF THE 50 + YEAR OLD AUTHENTIC REPRODUCTIUONS MADE IN THE 1950'S BY A NOW OUT OF BUSINESS SPORTS CARD MANUFACTURING BUSINESS

Ah, the dreaded "authentic reproductiuon" (must be the French spelling) image. Can't say I've heard that one before.

And he's got plenty more where that came from.

OK, you can bid on that. You can bid on that if you really want. But, if you're looking for the real thing, take a gander at this baby:

The "sales pitch" from these scammers gets better, but it's still the same garbage they are selling.

Yes, in 1955 they decided that the Mantle RC was going to be so valuable that they must create a $1000 printing press to make facsimilies of the card that was worthless at the time. Amazing foresight by those counterfeiters.

Well, I think it's interesting that sportscard experts in general and 1952 experts in particular don't know about these '52T Mantle reprints being made "fifty years ago," but this person does. What's the April 2003 Beckett article he's referring to?

Oh yeah, the shillers ... I mean bidders ... are private, and he doesn't take PayPal. He does say zero-feedback bids may be canceled. image

    Unfortunately the bidding has ended.

This item could have been pulled by this statement alone - again - it violates the authenticity clause.

It's amazing how these guys think they add credibility to their auctions coz they know a little HTML and make their claims in big colorful letters...oooh.

Ridiculous scams like this aside, the 1952 Mantle scams have really been curbed drastically over the past year, with recent months at less than 20% of the dollar amount being spent on these things in the early stages of when I started running that guide.

That counterfeit is actually one of the newest out there. It's a pretty good one too because it's a photocopy of an original, so the attributes are all correct. It's on pretty thick single sheet card stock, which is also impressive, as most color-copy counterfeits are printed on two separate sheets which are glued together. Problem is that the original has a crease in the shape of and upside-down V going through Mantle's cap, so now all these counterfeits have the crease printed right onto them. The copies look more washed out also, but they'll fool a novice easily.

Anyone who pays $335 for a counterfeit Mantle, especially when the card has been declared likely to be fake in the auction, is probably dumb enough to think there's a possibility that the card is real, therefore, they are greedy morons. It is absolutely amazing to see the average price of these scam auctions has dropped to around $400. What can people possibly be thinking? They were greedy when they thought they could get the card for $1-2K, which is what the scam auctions were regularly going for a year ago, but I think greed is long gone, it's just pure stupidity now.

Did you guys happen to see the other "authentic reproductions" the seller has available? It's not just the '52 Topps Mantle. He's got em all, Cobb, Ruth, and so on. All reproduced 50 years ago by the same company.
  • jrdolanjrdolan Posts: 2,549 ✭✭
I guess when he invented this reprint company that was issuing Mantle reproductions 50 years ago, he didn't know that Topps was dumping cases of 1952's into the ocean because it made too many and they didn't sell. Doesn't that make you weep to picture in your mind's eye?

Or is that just an urban legend of our hobby?
