I think this nickel was "sold" a few days ago by another scammer. I rememeber the weird photo. My Hot mail is screwing up AGAIN this morning so I can not verify it. I have an old email from a guy who notified me of this scammer who changed their ID and then he found them selling this same nickel, I think.

He does not own the coin. He stole the image he's using from Pinnacle.

  • Yes- the images are stolen from Pinnacle's website. So in fact what they are picturing is not the coin they are selling. Here is another example:

I got taken by this (these) thieves on a 1913 var 2 nickel a couple of weeks ago (I'm awaiting a paypal resolution.) Not a big amount-$62-but this individual and/or group is using at least three different ebay ID's. (divaseare, rk124764sm, jessica0486jessica.) I don't know how to report this type of thing to ebay-I tried. They ripped someone on a '37-D 3 leg to the amount of over $800. And they're still going. They have three ID's that I KNOW OF-all with the same wording and raggedly cropped, stolen images. I'll bet they have more ID's than three.

    Russ-
Thanks for the tip. They've been reported.
  • Heh- here is an email I got from the seller when I asked if they knew they were listing items with stolen pictures:

"I am not sure what you are talking about. I am listing these items for someone else. Please tell me more about what you know about this coin as I am not familar with rare coins and am concerned. I wanted to start making some money from home and answered an ad to sell items for a Coin and Collectibles company in AZ on ebay. The lady I am working for has an ebay id of MillAve24 and I checked her out and she seems legit. Thank you and any information on this would be helpful as I do not want to be held responsible for this."

    The plot thickens....

Tune in next week when Buffnut, our intrepid hero, says "All your buffalo nickel are belong to us!!!"

That is the same response that asirademorte used about a month ago. The thread was in the forum regarding a stolen Morgan photo that becky discovered. Coins and collectables is bravo sierra. asirademorte is in florida and their auctions ending the second week in april were all hoaxes. But they had a bidder on the 38-d half that is a shill. I kept a record of all the auctions. No feedback on any deliveries(10).

Recruiting ebay sellers or a ring ? That is the 64k question. Rob Chesnut will have his hands full on Monday.
    Have a nice day

I guess they couldn't decide what to call it? image

Maybe they thought they'd fool people by rotating the obverse pic sideways (duh).

    Buffnut-

I got the exact same response-word for word. They must be using a form reply.

The plot hasn't thickened and the seller did not end the auction. Let's see... He, she or it is in a world of sheit this morning. If what Rob Chestnut said at the Town Hall Meeting holds up, this idiot will be doing time shortly. You know, Chestnut...the ex- federal prosecutor in charge of security presently. Some smart person is taking a trip pretty soon! image

    Uh-oh....short career!
  • Good! Looks like their other bogus auctions are also pulled as well. The warning signs for me have been the rash of sellers with little to no feedback, who have spectacular coins for sale with very, very little description, and start the auction price very low with "Paypal account required". I hope these people are brought to justice swiftly!
  • I can't locate where these auctions have stolen pictures, but they just have that "look" to them that screams BEWARE!!

I've been in touch with a number of these different "sellers"-around ten that I KNOW OF-in the last day or two. I now believe they have been duped. The originator of this scheme, a guy down in Florida (where else? I have his name, too) apparently has contacted a number of inexperienced ebay sellers with a "Make money at home" scam, telling them if they sell coins for him they'll get a percentage of the selling price. They advertise; the money goes into his paypal account; the buyer never gets his item; and guess who's stuck holding the bag? The number of these "sellers" could amount to dozens all over the country and we have thousands of dollars involved here. A number of bidders have already been ripped off, me included, tho not for a large amount in my case. All this has been reported to ebay-we'll see what they do.

The tip-off is the identical wording and very similar (apparently) stolen images this guy uses. All 3 day auctions; all paypal only; the same shipping charges and instructions, etc. This is a very slick operation with a number of expensive coins involved. Following is a question I asked of one of the "sellers" and his reply. This item has been removed from ebay.

    You asked:
"Do you actually own this coin or are you selling it for someone? There is currently a huge scam going on with stolen images. This looks like one of them."

selling it for someone, please tell me more! I am going g to pull the auction...I knew something felt a little funny. can you tell me what you know about the scam...
