Hello Darkside people.

I dug a 200 Lire coin.

What is 200 Lire? Is that like our 25 cent piece or something?

You can see the coin here

Thanks folks.

PURPLE!

More like a dinosaur or a horse-and-buggy combo, now that Italy's gone Euro.

But yeah, it might've had about the buying power of our quarter, I guess. Don't recall the old exchange rate.

The coin, listed as Italy KM# 105 in Krause, is struck in aluminum-bronze alloy. All dates (1977-2001) list for 20 cents in Fine, 25 cents in VF, 35 cents in XF, and $1.25 in UNC.

The "R" mintmark is for Rome, so you could tell folks you dug a Roman coin while detecting and not be a liar. image

It did well in the ground. I'm surprised it wasn't darker.

The Sacagawea dollar I dug the other day was all brown. Funny how the US Mint did all those studies and tests on what alloy to use for the Sac dollar, and ended up choosing one that turns brown in circulation, let alone the dirt. They should have consulted some other countries. (Canada's "Loon" dollars, for example, keep their "golden" color a helluva lot longer than our Sac dollars.)

Yeah! I was a bit surprised when I first dug it up. I thought it was a slug LOL! Than I wiped away the filth and went wow! cool!.

    It's a neat looking coin.

Your right about the sac dollars, they just plain suck. As you said they should have look at other materials before choosing.

Those 200-lire pieces look nice in Brilliant Uncirculated.

Not a BU, no. I think I have some nicer circs lyin' around.

The bimetallic 500-L coins are the really nice looking ones.

I just check ebay and there isn't even a UNC 200 Lira in '79 up for auction. Weird. The A Uncs look pretty cool.
