Topps Baseball Puffy Stickers

Hi,

Have any of you ever seen this before?

image

My best guess as to date would be 1980 or 1981 since it has Reggie Jackson on the Yankees (went to the Angels in '82) and Dave Ford on the Orioles (1978-1981). Obviously George Foster never played for the Phillies, but since he's in a Reds uniform, it's probably earlier than '82. Likewise, Steve Garvey was never on the As and was a Dodger up through '82. The rest of the guys shown in the stickers (Felix Sun, Len Hill, Lester Maddux, and Frank Poz) don't exist.

Obviously a test issue. Topps might have been experimenting with stickers before coming out with them in 1981. Might have been an early idea that morphed into the 1984 and 1985 Topps Rub Downs (layout on the sheet remindes me of that kind of haphazard look).

Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks for looking!

Bob

    Bob,
If you don't mind me asking, where the heck did those come from? Man, i can't believe there is a Reggie on there. I'd love to know more if you find anything out.

    Thanks,

    Abe,

They were purchased by a fellow collector recently from Dean Zindler (private sale). Neither of them had any extra information regarding the stickers. If I'm remembering correctly, I think Bob Lemke was also asked if he had seen them before and he said no.

I'd break it open and peel off the Reggie sticker for you if I could, but I was just given a photocopy to post. Nobody trusts me. image

  • Bob,

Wait until I tell Lester that you don't think he exists.

He's not going to be happy.

Is it me or does "Felix Sun" look a little like Nolan Ryan?

I don't believe George Foster ever played for the Phillies either.

I thought that too for a bit. I decided it most likely wasn't (the chin doesn't look quite right). If it is though, the thing's "value" just went up a bit!

Thanks for the 2nd opinion. Speaking of Foster, I can't quite put it out of my mind that the Lester Maddux character in the scan does look like Foster (as a Met). Anyone else think so? If it is, it pushes the issue date into '82 or later.

It looks like Len Hill = Steve Nicosia

The scan isnt quite clear enough, but is Lester Maddox maybe Elliot Maddox?

You may be right although it's odd that they wouldn't use his correct name and position (like they did for Jackson or Ford). If it is then 1980 seems to be the best date.

I've found some information that Topps issued a set of Monstickers in 1979 (Puffy Ugly Stickers). This was a reissue of 1967 series, Ugly Stickers. They also issued puffy stickers for Cabbage Patch kids cards (got them sued too it seems). That must have been in '83 or '84.

Just noticed that there's a TM next to PUFFY STICKERS. Do any of you attorney types know how to find out when a trademark was applied for?
