Steve Hart just got in a couple of cases of 1986 fb vending

I just picked up a box for a little over $200. I have always wanted to break a 86 vending box. I already have a Rice PSA 9 but I'm looking for a White, Young and Reed in PSA 9+ condition.

Regards,

    Greg,

Let us know how that vending box is when you get it. I'm thinking about getting one myself.

Ok - here are the results:

The box was in very good shape, with no noticable damage on the outside. When I opened it, I noticed that the bottom corners were a little rough - many looked to be dinged (not a good sign). I began going through the cards and pulled:

    2 Rice rc's
    3 Young rc's
    2 Smith rc's
    1 Reed rc
    3 Montana's
    1 Elway
    1 Moon
    1 Payton

Overall, I was fairly pleased. The dinged corners knocked down a good majority of the cards. One of the Rice rc's and 2 of the Young rc's have three sharp corners and the fourth is moderately dinged. The centering was generally very good (which surprised me). For a stretch, every 9th or 10th card was o/c 80/20 or worse t/b but all were commons or semi-stars. I ended up with one Rice and one Young that should be locks for PSA 9's, one Payton that should come back a 9, and there are a handful of commons that I've pulled that are in PSA 9/10 condition. I need to go back through the box and pull all the commons and semi-stars that are gradeable. I was too busy searching for the Rice to accurately grade all the commons.

Overall, a good value for the $ (a little over $200). I could only wish the corners were better, but I an can finally say that I've busted a 1986 vending box. Thanks Steve - I received the box in 4 days!!

  • Congrats greg on the results! After seeing your results I ordered myself one! If I get a PSA9 rice out of it, I would be very content with my purchase.

He just got in an '86 Topps Football cello box at $400. Nice...

  • how can you tell if those vending boxes have been opened/searched? Always wanted to buy one but it seems awful easy to search.

    TIA

  • I figured its from a trustworthy seller and someone has already had decent luck with a vending box from the same lot so I pulled the string on it. I dont think these boxes are sealed. Just gotta trust the seller I guess.

  • i understand the "trust" factor but from a "facts" standpoint how can i physically tell if the vending box i buy has been unsearched? Ive never bought a vending box so....by looking at a picture of the vending box it looks to be just a plain old box that can (a) be easily opened (b) searched though without detection ??
I've met Steve several times and even visited his place of business. Trust his stuff, so, this is just a general question. Its just for my own info so i dont get burnt.

    TIA

An unsearched vending box has a unique, tight "pattern" to the cards - you can just tell from looking at it that it is untouched. If you try to put the cards back in the box, they don't all fit - and the pattern is gone. Perhaps someone can elaborate a bit more, but I have opened enough vending to know what is legit, and what's not. Of course, when dealing over the internet, you have to rely on the seller and his reputation.

ctsox you are correct, a vending box will have ridges where some of the cards are stacked a little higher in the box it gives it a lighter- darker effect if that makes sense. Imagine looking down on a freshly plowed piece of land, it kinda looks like that.

  • ok opened my vending box and it was a disappointment.

    0 Rices
    3 Youngs
    3 Paytons
    3 Reids
    2 Elways

Most of the cards in my box had at least one bad corner. I can see only one card that will be gradeable(1 of the Paytons may net me a 9 if I am lucky). The rest will grade a 7 or lower. Overall I'm disappointed at the outcome but hey, it was fun opening it and hoping to pull a pristine rice or young rookie. Hopefully others have better results than I did.

  • Donnnster, I bought an '86 Topps football wax box several years back and got pretty much the same results that you did. No Rice cards, two Youngs, Elway, Marino, Reed, etc. That experience pretty much turned me off to buying boxes for a while.

Got it about an hour ago Two Rice's -two youngs- two elways- two montana's- and several more good ones corners on most are a little nipped but still overall i like it the Rice and Youngs look like maybe 8's

I may scan them in later....

Here are the 2 biggies, tell me what you would grad'em

  • NIce to see that someone got a couple Rices! If I were to grade the cards, according to the psa standards, an 8 can have "slightest fraying at one or two corners". From looking at the youngs, the first one doesn't qualify for an 8. Probably a 7. Its hard to see on the scan for the second one but it might receive an 8 if the top left corner or bottom right one is sharp(hard to see from the scan). Both Rice's look like they can be 8s. Really good centering on the Rices make them pretty attractive cards. I wish I had your box!!! Wanna swap? haha I had to at least askimage

Donn, that was exactly my thinking on the grades I probably wont even submit the first young. Would any of you guys be interested in building a raw set of tthe 86's. I was thinking we could trade between each other for the cards we needed.

I have also been going through the box once again, I may have stumbled upon a marino team leader that is a 10! I have looked at it under my loupe and it looks darn good.

Donnster - sorry to hear that you didn't get a Rice in your box. I noticed in my box that you get multiple of the same players - which stands to reason there are cards that won't be in a particular box. To be honest, this was the best vending box that I've opened - and I've opened nearly every vending box from 1977 to 1990.

It's funny how the centering was generally very good, which hasn't been the case in most other vending that I've opened. I'm surprised that the corners were as dinged as they were. I asked Steve for a box from the middle of the case- - which is what he sent to me. Even that box was dinged, which leads me to believe that the dings occurred during production or collation. It's too bad because there would have been many 9's and 10's in my box if not for the corners.

  • a note on the Rice scans. First thing i noticed was that the diagonal lines at the top of the card are not offset. Most Rice cards have the lines that are offset which always brings the grade down. Hard to tell from the scans but those seem to be at least 8's. If you dont send them in to get graded i would bet they would do well on ebay as raw cards.

  • tennessee-count me in regarding the attempt to collate a raw set. Once I have time to figure out what I have and what duplicates I can trade, I will post or PM you.

gregm- glad ya got a good vending box. I guess sometimes with these boxes its hit or miss. One mint rice could turn the results around but that didn't happen in my case. I guess I will look for a decent psa 8 rice on ebay(man those psa 9s dont come around too often and when they do, they usually end up in the high 200s on ebay). If you do get your rice graded and get a 9 and want to sell it, let me know.

I bought 2 of these boxes, and I concur with the comments about the cards all being dinged. This case must have been moved around a bit, as almost every card had some problem with its edges. I pulled 22 cards to grade (out of the 1000 total), including 3 Rices, 4 Youngs, and 2 really nice Paytons. Not as happy with these as some other vending I have bought, but just luck of the draw I guess.

Well someboady has to be the guinea pig, and since I have a moderate to major gambling problem I figure why not me. I ordered the cello box. While I realize I'm paying $180 for about 100 or so extra cards, I did well with an 82 cello box so why not give it a shot. I just think there's something about the 80s cello box with the lighter cellophane and looser wrapping that the cards will stay mint if the cases aren't thrown around too much. Then again I may have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about. 86 was the first year I collected and it should bring back memories- I remember opening rack after rack from the local Giant grocery store. I really hope I get some nice Refrigerator Perry RCs. A Rice and Young would be nice too.

  • nice, i wish i had the funds to buy a cello box too! i got tired of tryin to get my rice rookie via boxes and buying one raw in hopes of a psa9 so i bought one off of ebay finally. oh well let us know how that cello box turns out!

The only PSA 9 Rice rc that I have was bought raw off E-Bay for $40. Good luck - I hope it turns out ok for you.
