How picky is PSA on fuzzy or rough cut edges

Hi I normally only submit newer stuff in for grading so there usually isn't an issue of any edge problems but I am curious on cards say from 1989 or earlier how picky is PSA on fuzzy or rough cut edges? I am busting some 1989 donruss and 1987 topps rack cases and most of the cards are coming out extremely clean except for most have fuzzy or mildly rough cut edges which is common for these issues. Will all the centered ones with sharp sharp corners get 9s and 10s even with the edge issues or do they really crack down on that? Any help you guys can give me would be much appreciated.

  • Not picky at all.

If you consider this a flaw than it is the one they are the most leniant with, especially for issues in which the rough cut is common.

I'm beginning to think PSA doesn't even take edges into account.
  • Interesting, I have noticed some very ugly rough cut 9s on older cards on ebay so I was just curious is that the norm or possibly those cards just slipped through the cracks.

  • Wow so is that the norm or only big dealers like DSL can get 10s on cards that look like that?

There is a thread on that discussion, we do not know if they had this card graded or bought it like that. That is a touchy subject on the grading of large submitters.

I personally love rough cuts. Given a choice between two equally graded cards, I'd choose the one with the rough cut. Probably a hold over from my fondness for OPC cards.

How grading companies deal with factory rough cuts is my biggest gripe.. They don't knock down the grade at all due to a rough cut which is ridiculous considering they do for print spots, factory surface wrinkles, centering.. Its just stupid.

... about PSA giving better grades than deserved to big dealers who do many large submissions...

I think this is false. If this were the case I think guys like BMW that do a lot of business with SGC would be doing the majority of there business with PSA instead. He's got gorgeous SGC graded cards and if the allegation were true those SGC 8's and 9's would be PSA 10's instead.

  • Well my opinion is that larger submitters do get preferential treatment from grading companies I mean it makes sense if you're getting thousands and thousands of $$ from certain people per month wouldn't you be sure and hook them up more then a guy that is maybe spending a few hundred $$ with you in a whole year? I think if anyone is naive enough to think they don't get better grades then the avg person then you must be on crack.

    No kidding..

It would not be in PSA's best interest to do this. They make much more money from the thousands and thousands of little guy submitters than they do from just the big time dealers. It wouldn't take long if what you think were true to get out thus destroying their relationship with the little guys which would mean losing a ton of business.

FYI.. Your probably on your way to being banned from these message boards if you keep bringing it up.

  • 4SC grades a lot of modern. I'm sure he only sends in cards he is confident will receive 10s.

He sells a lot of 9s. Thus, PSA must not be giving him any breaks... or at least not as many as you think he's getting.

Would you compromise your business for 1% of your customers if it might cost you the other 99% ?

    I didn't think so.
