1975/76 Topps Basketball wax break....

Just received my four 1975/76 Topps BK wax packs I paid $20 each for. My hopes were for a really nice Moses Malone RC for my collection, but there are several cards in the set I'd be happy to have. Here are the highlights:

Dr J

semis

My feeling is that all these cards will probably grade out to 9s. If the Dr J gets a 9 I'll sell because there are other cards I'd rather have at $150, but I'll keep it if it's an 8. here's a few funny cards:

funny

I think the first guy is #6 on the Al Qaeda most wanted list. How did Roche get his hair in a perfect circle?

Put some dark sunglasses on him and you have Roy Orbison.

Yeah, but Roy had an excuse for looking wierd.

  • That is a sweet Dr J - sure looks like a 9 to me.

Love the bowl cut - I bet that guy couldn't walk onto and play at Duke today. Aziz looks scary.

$20/box - A cheap price for that show.

    Lee,
Any chance you got a Keith Wilkes or Artis Gilmore?

    Balco,
Are you talking about the guy Dr. J is jumping over? If I'm not mistaken that's Dan Issel, one of the UK and the ABA's greatest, bad hair or not.

That's another reason I like the Dr. J card. He makes Issel look like a scared little girl. Only Dr. J could pull off the "sitting on the other guy's back reverse finger roll."

  • Abe,

I was talking about Roche, err I mean Danny Partridge....Can you Roche doing a cross over dribble? No way! But, yes, Dan Issel who is practically eating Juluis' jock in that shot, was a terrific player......

    $20/pack - my bad.

I always thought Roy Orbison was Doctor Octopus from Spider Man?

Then again I confuse Chuck Norris, Martina Navritilova and Tom Petty?

  • CD since I know you like to open old vintage stuff would you possibly be interested in some 80 topps football grocery rack packs?

Never was a huge Phil Simms fan and since I predominantly collect RCs, 1980 is not at the top of my list of things to bust right now. Feel free to PM me if you come across any other vintage wax though.

I thought Tom Petty was John Elway?

John Roche is actually probably the best player ever to come of the University of South Carolina. He was with them back in the 70s when they were still in the ACC and won an ACC Player of the Year award. Granted, he does look like a goofball...

If you or anyone have a nice 1975 Basketball card #126 or #219 (supersonics team) you want to sell, let me know. I'm looking for cards that would grade a 7-9.

I would have to disagree on that one.Of course I would say Brian Winters but I think number one would have to be Alex English if we are using what they did in the NBA as a benchmark.
As far as that set goes it's my all-time favorite and I was actually working on a graded set but I got tired of not being able to find any wax boxes.Just got done dumping it on Ebay for a big loss. Not a very popular set but I love it because of the memories from my childhood.
Get any Brian Winters rookies in those packs??

bw, why the fascination with Winters? I never really saw him play so I have no opinion on his game. Didn't he coach the Magic in the early 90s?

Well I'm from Milwaukee so I got to see him play a lot back then because my parents had season tickets for many years.I just thought he was a cool guy with the fu-manchu and the sweet jump shot.I always said that I looked up to him like kids today love Lebron or Jordan.
He was just my guy and because he has so few cards I need to branch out and find other items to collect.
He did do some assistant and head coaching in the NBA and is now the head coach of the Indiana team in the WNBA.

That's what collecting is about- not because something is valuable or because you want to show off to people, but because the stuff reminds you of a particular time in your life that you enjoyed watching the game being played by cartain players/teams.
