Grading Test

Ok here is a test. I will present scans of two holdered cards. Your job is to 1) assign your own grade for each and 2) guess what the PSA grade was. First hint, these cards did not receive the same grades. Second hint, there is nothing different about the cards except what you see on the scans.

Post your answers below. I will post the PSA grades in a couple of days.

  • It's the same card and once you got a 6 grade and the most recent time it came back an 8.

They're two different cards. I only grade baseball cards.
  • I took a better look, and you are right, they are two seperate cards. My grades still stand. one is a 6, the other is an 8.

For me to accuratly grade the cards I must see the back? If the back is off centered , I hope you look at the back when you look at your cards because it is/should always be part of the grade.

I am going to say 7 on the top but I would grade a 5 because it is diamond cut/toned and has print marks.
bottom looks half way decent and I am going to say 9 but I would give it an 8 because of that print spot over the "S" in raiders.

    I'll agree.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • The top one is a little bit off on the registry, which gives it the appearance of being slightly off center. I could see PSA not counting that at all, or giving this card a 7.

The bottom card looks near perfect, I would expect a 9 at least. The print spot could be counted though, and a lower grade given, but I rarely see them do that.

I'm going with 7 on top, 9 on bottom.

  • My PSA 8 of this card is quite a bit off center, and has the same type of print spot.... I'd say that the second card show is supoerior and looks like a 9.

I would probably be able to more accurately grade if you had the card w/ princess lei in the
pimpstress outfit chained to jabba the hut.

  • *cotemplates Leia... ok, anyhow, back to the thread. A couple of addendums for star wars cards, printing defects like those shown usually don't cause a down grade. These were common for most cards and you can see plenty of examples on the PSA Set Registries for the STAR WARS cards.

I am curious for those that have said the second card is a 7 or 8, why you would think that?

This don't usually show up when PSA behaves as expected.

    Top - 9.
Bottom - 7. Due to PD.

Arguements could be made to support both cases.

I'd prefer the bottom card as the large print dot isn't that distracting amongst the other intentional white splotches, but I'm guessing the top card would be a little more expensive.
  • I will put up answer tonight when I get home (I want to post the pictures of the entire holder for effect, :-)). Thanks for the input.

Impossible to grade by scans alone but for the sake of playing:

    Top - 6 maybe a 7
    Bottom - 9

    A=8 B=9

But since it's a test your probably going to throw us a curveball and the grades are probably the opposite.

To everybody that said 6 or 7 to the top one, why? The centering and the blue running into the border?
