Scans stolen from the registry

Several times in the last year or so, I've learned to my surprise that my cards were being sold on eBay -- without my knowledge. The scans were stolen from my registry sets. I learned about one of them when PSA asked me to remove a Clemente rookie from my set because someone else was trying to register it. Poor guy had bought it from a scammer; he kept thinking and thinking the card was going to arrive any day now and he couldn't wait to add it to his player set. I felt so bad for him.

I would guess that some people (especially those who post scans of their 52T Mantles!) have their scans "borrowed" all the time. I know of a few registry members who pulled their photos for that very reason, and at least a couple have blacked out (or whited out) the cert. numbers. Does anyone have thoughts about showing off their cards in the registry, and the registry being a free photo supply-house for scammers?

You and others should edit your photo's put text over top that is transparent using photoshop or something with 'jrdolan' on the card or whatever.. No one would use the photo's then.

Not a big concern of mine. My 1978 Topps set is hardly of the "ilk" to be stealing cert numbers from but I can see how this can be a BIG problem for those who have big dollar cards scanned into the registry.

  • You want to stop people from stealing your scans? Put on the middle of the card in the scan COUNTERFEIT! I doubt anyone will use your scans that way.
  • I stole this scan.....from someones registered set image

  • I really enjoy having my scans with my registered set so I can enjoy the cards anywhere I have a PC and easily show friends. I simply white out all but the last 3 digits of the cert number. Wht the not all? Because in the case of an Insurance claim, I have an off site DVD with the full scan with complete cert numbers and this will allow my Insurance company to quickly verify that I do indeed own the cards as they are registered to me on the PSA site and be able to match the last 3 digits with those cert numbers they have on file. I also like Knuckles idea about an overlay with the name.....

That's not very effective people can still use that mantle image and just blank out the IJustLoveCards with white.

This is what I meant and no this card isn't mine, I wish it were.

    Knuckles,

Although I agree here is the same scan that you borrowed after I did about 15 minutes of work on it.

It's not perfect (If I spent more time on it it would look better) but it's probably good enough to fool someone that didn't know better.

but you would have a problem on ebay because as the seller there is no cert number...

one would have to guess as to the cert number...

    Good point.

But how many newbies even think about that?

If I ever need someone to do Photoshop stuff at work I am hiring Barfvader. That was impressive work!

The program I use isn't Photoshop.

It's PhotoImpression 2000 and it really easy to use.

I have Photoshop but have never gotten around to really figuring it out. Maybe someday.

Not bad.. I can still see where the K use to be etc.. but only because I knew it was there I wouldn't notice it if I didn't know.

Here's the orginal VS your removal of 'Knuckles'

    Knuckles,

Really noticeable between the two images. The cleaning up that I done is totally dependent on where someone places their text. Plus I only took about 15 minutes.

Obviously seeing the two images it shows alot of mistakes in my fixing it due to where you placed certain letters but for someone that didn't know any better like all the people that fall for all the scams on eBay it could fool someone.

I agree.. It would have fooled me I don't look for things like that on cards.

I have started only scanning the card itself - not the PSA label. I actually do it to keep the size of the scanned image a reasonable size, but it prevents anyone from using my scans for ebay scams - as if anyone would actually want any of may scans anyway. As I kept trying to reduce the file size on my scans, I couldn't think of a good reason to include the flip in the scan. If you want to know the card's grade, its on the registry.

Knuckles, I wish I had your computer chops. When I started reading the thread, the sigline pic was the Orr RC. I scroll down and it's Mess and Sawchuk. I'm like "Wow, he must've just changed it." But then I see that it's animated! Maybe I'm just too easily amused, but that's way cool, dude.

I do my Registry images the same way, jvineyard. Not so much for image-theft prevention, but I think that's a nice bonus to that approach to scanning and cropping. Cool set, by the way!

  • Knuckles. I just watched that Sawchuk video. I always thought he was the best, but that film made me a bit misty and gave me even more respect for him, while feeling sorry at the same time. Pure trajedy.

I whited out all the cert numbers on cards I have imaged in my registry sets. I think everyone should do this.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I like that idea. It won't stop 'em from stealing the card if they really want to, but at least they can't use the PSA flip to make their scam seem legitimate. I imagine the flipless card is pretty much useless to the scammers, so they keep looking for what they need.
