that's a nice looking coin regardless of the slab. I've seen MUCH worse in PCGS holders! In fact, after I bought my VG8 I ran across a G4 or G6 on Heritage's site (i think it was) that had a Much more prominent counting mark on it than yours!

  • I'm not just puffing up my coin here Goose3, but it really is a very nice looking coin, much nicer than the pictures convey. The coin has a very original and natural look; the few specs and counting marks are amplified by the pictures, but are much more subtle and are quite unobtrusive when viewed in person.

Along the lines of other coins you have seen with these marks in PCGS slabs, here's one I noted in my description that just sold (but I have seen many others also):

"I have seen several 18/7's and 1916/16's with these marks in PCGS holders (in fact, there is one at auction right now at Heritage St. Louis CSNS Sale, see Lot 6112, a PCGS 6 currently at $3200)."

PCGS 1916/16 with Counting Wheel Mark

Maybe this one ends up PCGS slabbed someday? It's my understanding that they'll let these things slide a bit on really rare coins and sort of net grade them, if you will.

With XF's in the 16-18K+ range and AU's in the 28-32K range, I think this coin should be considered a bargain opportunity for someone building a VF/XF set. It would fit right in and make it's owner proud!

    Thanks,

that one you linked sure looks like the one I stumbled across right after buying my VG8 and If I recall correctly the price on the G6 was OVER 4,000! I paid 3950 for my VG and it is a fantastic VG. I might as well show off a pic.image

  • Very nice solid coin!

This is one of my favorite rare coins of all time. In addition to the doubled date, I especially love all the "other" doubling like the feathers, throat, ribbons etc. One of my biggest thrills was actually finding one in a lot of No Date Buffalos one time. The date was almost there but not quite. I restored it and it came out great, as far as restored dates go. That was a real dilemna, I agonized over whether to restore it or leave it natural (but with the date and doubling only visible in my imagination). I guess it turned out alright, I ended up selling it for about $600 or so back then. Sheesh, I bet a nice restored date 16/16 might even go for over $1000 now.
