4 years and another MS 68 Ike

My Ike sets lingers at the middle of the pack, but I am totally committed to finding the first 76-S silver in MS-69, It took four years and I finally found my second 68. Its a great looking coin and is better then the first one I found years ago. Seems as if the graders are looking harder at Ikes and getting good grades is tuff.

Does any one think there is a 69 out there?

  • The only Ikes in 69 (PCGS) are 72, 73, 74.

I have a beautiful 76-S in MS 68. Haven't been able to improve it either.

Anyone with a 69 I would sure like to know.

It's quite possible. I've seen three or four that are extremely pretty and virtually
mark-free. While this hardly assures that an MS-69 exists there are quite a few
times that the best modern is far better than the second best. It wouldn't take
much of an exception to reach MS-69.

The best I've seen is a little PL with very sharp devices and lettering. The earlier
40% silvers also sometimes come in much higher grade than would be implied from
the normal distribution curve. This especially applies to the '71 and '72.

Somebody will make one when PCGS let's up about .25 of a point.

I hope it's me, but whoever it is good luck!

    Hi Charllie,

CONGRATS on your 76-S MS68 Ike!image I have been searching about 4 years as well
ands have only made 2image.....However, in searching for the "Great Silver Ike", I decided to start
looking at the Quarters and Halves as well. I've made several Quarters and about 4 Halves in 68.
I think you can easily get $500 for a nice MS68 76-S Half these days. This made the long dry spells
and lots of "just misses" a little easier to bear.

    And.........yes, I even made the ONLY 76-S MS69 Kennedy one day!image
I believe it is still the only one ever made and it resides in the #1 Kennedy set. I got it from a set it
off of eBay for around $12.
So, I believe it can be done!image

While you are looking for that 68 Ike,.....look for a rotated reverse. I have seen a couple for the 76's,
but none yet for the other MS Silver Ikes (If some one has a non-76 Silver Ike rotated Reverse, PLEASE let
    me know!image) I have a 135 degree rotated reverse 76-S in PCGS MS68 in my best Ike Set....(Thanks, GRANDAM!)image

Best of luck on your quest for your 69 Ike!image.....
I believe IT CAN BE FOUND!

There may be an MS69 out there, but IMO right now PCGS would slab it as a 68.

The standards will have to change at PCGS before a MS69 will be graded.

why are all the .68's silver?

are clad's softer, less luster, more easily nicked?

    congrats on your find/score

The clad is much harder, as a metal. The mint has stated that the Ike dollar ( in clad ) was the most difficult coin that they ever minted.
The shield 5 cent piece was the same, that's why the rays were deleted.
Ike dollars are almost never found ( in clad ) above MS66. There are a handful in MS67 !!!
